Sunday afternoon quail hunt

Had about 3 hours to kill yesterday afternoon and ended with this near my house here in Missouri. 2 pointed coveys and a pointed single, 3 birds with 4 shots from the 60 year old Ithaca 37 16 guage. Unfortunately, worked and worked to find the first bird that fell in a bramble thicket and never found it. Even made a couple passes through an hour later and didn't pick up any scent.

Hopefully Sunday I'm posting big bird pics from Kansas

No long tails for me man, she is a GSP.

Was going to get a pointing pic on the first covey and the battery on my phone was dead, so you'll just have to take my word for it. I've got some posted from last year on pheasants to prove she knows how to do it. :)

First covey seemed like there were 15 birds or so.

Second covey I'd say had every bit of 30 birds, they just kept getting up and getting up. I only shot the one time though because the grass was so tall and thick I didn't want to take a chance on loosing another bird. This covey was for sure a late hatch. The rooster I killed wasn't any bigger than a mature dove. During dove season, she pointed a covey about a quarter mile from this covey, and they were just big enough to get over the top of the grass and fly well, but not far at all.

I like your dog shes cool looking looks like a ep from the front, I know she can point birds cheese I just like looking at the pics:)

went quail hunting around Truman lake today made a big circle but nothing put the dogs up and put some peg steps in for my tree to go deer hunting lol saw lots of tracks trails duck hunters have been seeing lots of nice bucks so they say? Rough Sunday hunt

3 guys, 5,what I consider above average dogs, made a huge circle on my hotspot Sunday. I knew where 5 coveys were last year at end of season at this place. We never found a bird. I can't figure it out. Even if scent conditions were awful, we should have at least bumped a covey. Went to spot I had never hunted after that I believe was the best piece of ground I have seen in years. It had everything. No bird contact. Headed to a spot I know for a fact has 2 coveys, easy to find, that I run dogs on and rarely shoot birds on. They were there last week. Never found a bird. I'm stumped. Anyone else ever had a day like this? Scent conditions? Bad luck? Are numbers really this bad? Here I am complaining about what I hear all the time, no birds. I have spent a lot of time chasing birds where everyone has said there aren't any for several years and done pretty well. Maybe reality is catching up to me. I may deer hunt next weekend. Can't believe I just said that. Lol:cheers:

I done the 'no" bird day, even when there were a lot of birds. The old timers used to say "you can't get a bird up with a dozer in mid afternoon". I have come to the conclusion that I find about 1/2 of the birds, which I know are there. Here and there, you find them all. I had a day in the 1980's where we found 12 coveys in the field, just letting the dogs find and point long after we were through limit wise. On the way home we had two different coveys cross the gravel in front of the car! We assumed that we would clean up the next day, of course we saw one covey, had to get by on our pheasant limit, those would be the pheasants we didn't see the previous day. I have seen the Missouri conservation department has radio tracked quail, which were undetected by birddogs with in feet, even when they told the hunters where they were. If we knew it all, it wouldn't be fun. I bet you can go there again, and find a good percentage of the quail in the area.
