Suburban Pheasants

Went out today chasing the elusive suburban pheasant. The dog and I were able to stretch the legs and enjoy the cold temps. I know a spot behind a factory that has some open space I run the dog in.

All in all we had a great day and found 3 pheasants (not bad for a 45 minute run). Dog did well today holding his point while watching the bird run off, until I released him. This is usually something he prefers not to do, so I was happy.

I've attached a photo I was able to get before one of the birds flushed.

Anyone else getting out for scouting or tweaking for next season?
 
Way to go Cookie! No suburban birds around here. Out varmint hunting last night, saw big coyote, while partner saw fox. Yote too far, fox too close. Try again tonight.

I have Monday off and if the weather holds up, I might wipe the dust off the gun and actually hit the hunt club. Let the dog get a retrieve and see if he is really going to hold point or if that was a coincidence.
 
Off Monday too, maybe hook up. Will do our best tonight, let you know.
 
That could be a spot here in Janesville that holds some birds complete with the tan building.

I've been shooting some clays,and I've been seeing a ton of turkeys getting pumped for spring.

We'll have to get out for clays before next fall. Maybe you'll be faster then me on the draw next time. :D
 
Finally Backed Another Dog!

It only took 5 years but my dog backed every point he had an opportunity on today! It was the highlight of my day. Other highlights worth mentioning:
we picked up 13 birds and only released 6! We busted a South Dakota covey of pheasants, roughly 35 birds busted (of course they were out ahead of us and we only picked up 2 that were dumb enough to hold).

Now if I can consistently keep him holding birds that he can see, then I will just about have him were I want him.


P.S. WisTurk: I will need to channel "Billy the Kid" or "Doc Holiday" in order to get the draw on you :D
