Steel Shot

I have an 870 LW 20 mag. Had it for 25 years or so. It came out before choke tubes. Now Remington says they don't make barrels for it anymore. So using steel shot in it, will it hurt my barrel. It is a mod. choke.

I also have an 1100 LT 20 and a Browning Citori White Lightning 20, both with tubes from the factory. Will steel shot hurt the factory tubes, were they made for steel shot? What tubes do you guys recommend to replace the factory tubes?

Shouldn't be any problem

If you look at a steel shot wad it offers any barrel lots of protection. I listened to Tom Roster (the steel shot guru), he basically said he had never seen significant damage in any modern gun, from steel shot. Your guns are new enough I would think twice about it.

I shot 100s of rounds a year through my 1973 Browning Citori, no problems

Long time rule with steel shot in modern arms, but prior to the advent of steel shot, is no choke tighter than modified. Own several myself. In tighter chokes you may get a slight ring bulge, at the forcing cone, especally in Brownings because chokes in the Belgium guns have always been significantly tighter than typical american chokes of the same named constriction. In single barrel guns, it's not a big deal, in an expensive double gun, not specifically designed for steel, I wouldn't shoot steel shot regardless of what any shotshell manufacturer claims. There are lots of non-lead alternatives safe to shoot, not as cheap to shoot, but won't cause you cosmetic damage or worse. You pay your money and take your chances. I shoot nice shot, bismuth, and tugnsten polymer, through some really old guns, some powered by black powder and even fired through damascus barrels. I like nice shot the best, but pricey. I don't have to shoot a no-tox area very often either.

I agree. I primarily hunt roosters w/ 100+ year old Parkers- both steel and Damascus. I use either Hevi-Shot classic doubles or Game Bore Tunsgsten Matrix when I am forced to use no tox. They kill pheasants like lightning when I do my part. I have and do shoot both 3 inch Goose Hevi-Shot or Black Cloud steel through an old Win Model 12 Heavy Duck. It is bored ultra tight (95%+ patterns) and I have seen no ill effect. I also use Tunsten Matrix in it- a better practice. The gun is not worth worrying about.

1100's from the late 70s/early 80s had issues with steel shot not cycling the action. We opened up the gas tubes (carefully) on our to allow it to shoot lead and steel.
