Steady to Shot?

I knew I had seen something about a pointing dog trained to point then flush on command from a reputable source, NAVHDA. http://www.navhda.org/video.html "Flushing on command"

I am not a pointer guy at all but I can see there thought process. I hunt with a friend you runs a Wirehair. On several occasions he has called the labs over to flush the bird because the bird was hold up in a location that he could not get to to flush the bird or if he did he would never be able to shoot it.

Probably would require a very advanced level of training.

and there aren't many pointer guys who would want to be in the same field

GSP- understood-

you seem wise is the ways of pointing dogs

Nope. Just starting to feel like I'm getting a grasp on dogs.

Another tip to the OP. Get involved in trialing. By that I don't mean running trial dogs (just yet) yourself, but hang out at trials (doesn't matter the venue) for a couple years. You will learn to sort the wheat from the chaff. A lot of the guys there are chaff, but the wheat (err, cream) rises to the top. Talk to those guys.

Chuckles- glad you didn't take it wrong- hunting with others- yes- that is a big issue and one you should really think about

if you want yours steady, you have to really look at every dog that might be in the same field- meaning- you train yours to hunt the way you want- you of course want the other dogs to be trained to the same standard- specially with a young dog- they pick up on other dogs actions real quick

your's is real young- I'd keep it fun and simple for awhile- and just the two of you- unless you have a freind who is like minded- but there is a catch to that

I've got 2 that are steady to wing- wouldn't be very hard to turn them into steady to shot, or steady to fall- but I'd sure enough not take them with another who wasn't steady- to perfection- I just don't see a reason to have all 4 of mine that steady- steady to the bird rising- absolutely

I started my two pups in pheasants at 4 months- they learned from my other Britts- I wanted them to learn by example- they did- would I have hunted them that first season with someone who had another dog- nope-
