Southeastern KS

All, looking at possibly making trip to KS this year. Been a few years since I last visited. Previously hunted Coffey and Osage up to Nemaha and as far west as Rooks County in the past. I’m specifically interested in southeastern KS as that is the closest area to me. Not looking for specifics, but know the past several years that area has been down. Ideally would like to get into 3+ coveys a day. We will walk 10+ miles a day behind broke dogs so if they are there we feel like we can find them. Unreasonable? Possible? Your thoughts especially those that hunt or reside in that area are appreciated. Would be hunting public. Thanks to all.

I have hunted the counties you mentioned, I think the counties around Osage county / Lyon county with the native grass pastures and row crap and tree lines would be good . In the area you talk about 5 to 6 coveys a day on private ground pretty doable . Treat yourself and your bird dogs and hunt the Smokey Hills region of Ks or go to far southwest corner of the state .

Thanks KSBrittman. The last time we visited we actually hunted on the western side of the Smoky Hill region, Rooks and surrounding counties some. That’s been a few years and it was extremely dry, but there were some birds. Unfortunately, dogs couldn’t smell them it was so dry. Below 20% humidity by 10:00 AM. That was a 16-17 hour trip for us coming from the east. If there are decent bird populations in the eastern/southeastern areas would like to focus there if possible. We would almost completely be relying on public walk in ground. I’m in KY and we have “some” quail but seems like this is going to be a down year here from what I have saw so far.
