Southeastern Colorado Reports...

Hey folks... wondering if anyone here hunted the southeast portion of the state... in the Walsh area. I know the precip was very low... and I expect the bird numbers to be way down... but wondering if they are so low that it is pointless to even hunt. Any general reports? If I can find good spots, are there still birds?

I do appreciate the exercise and challenge... and have always enjoyed hunts even if no bird is found... But that said... My dog at least likes to chase some hens for her effort....

Thanks!... my gas tank, thus my wallet, thus my wife has not allowed me statewide scouting options this year...

Southeast

Didn't make it all the way down to Walsh. Went about 20-30 miles south of Holly. Needless to say, I didn't need to go any further South to see that it was a very dry year. Saw a couple of birds, but they were in farmer's yards. There is little if any cover out in that part of the world this year. Good luck if you go.

Go north Jason, even Burlington is parched this year (both cover & birds are SPARSE)...southeast CO & southwest KS are even worse, the birds need a rest for some seed-stock when the habitat bounces back!

I agree with Hen Hen, (boy that is hard to say). Burlington's cover was about half of last year and the birds are sparse. I did venture a few miles into Kansas and the cover was getting better and the number of birds were also up. But in that area and south it is going to be hit and miss with more misses unfortunetly.

I to have a difficult time convincing my wife that bird hunting is a cost effective way to keep me happy. But she does like getting the smelly dog out of the house. Good luck.

Thanks for the intel guys... I was thinking the same thing as HHR... Sparse cover... esp if we end up with harsh winter weather will be hard enough on the birds without me shooting them...

Wait a minute...

I am a bad enough shot that all I am doing is giving the birds exercise...

SDT,
It was good meeting you this past weekend. I hope you and your family has a Happy Thanksgiving...good luck hunting, take care and I hope to meet that Irish Setter of yours. I have never hunted with one. Always wanted too...they are beautiful animals.

Likewise meeting you and your son. Good luck on getting him some bird action. Nothing like the first time rooster flush and shot, even if you don't get the bird the adrenaline rush for the kid, wow, he will be hooked. Happy T-day and best wishes to your family.

SDT: I think you gave me an idea for turkey day........get the skunk spray and a little dab on the dog might just do it to get us out for some birds!
