Saw ok numbers last year in southeast Iowa near what cheer, headed back again for opening weekend anyone have a report on the birds in the area? is the corn coming out of the fields? thanks

Bird numbers have come up but we're still way below the long term average. There's still a lot of crops in right now but they're starting to come out and I have a feeling the farmers will be going hot and heavy this weekend to beat next week's rain... things are looking up.

I drove near What Cheer last Tuesday (in the rain) to pick up a pup near Pella. There was still a lot of crops (corn and beans) in the fields, but the harvesting should be going full steam this week. I live in far east Iowa (Scott County) and there was a lot of harvesting going on over the weekend and should be a lot more this week. Still there will be a good amount of corn still standing the first week of the season. I have seen more birds this fall than last year.....

I am combining in NW Iowa and have seen peasant populations much above the last few years. If I were hunting I would hit those weedy drowned out spots in the fields. Each of those I have driven across has had birds.
