South Dakota Wetlands Protection

There was an article in the local paper penned by John Cooper, one of the good guys, IMO, regarding the reduction in wetlands and other factors involved in wildlife conservation.

Hopefully you can read it and it isn't blocked behind a paywall - https://www.thepublicopinion.com/st...-conservationists-share-concerns/76864456007/
It looks like you can read one article before the paywall shows up.

Too bad they didn't set a size/revenue limit for the federal programs in the past, which would have evened the playing field more for the little guys.

The no-till push is encouraging. I wasn't sure if it was just my imagination, but I thought I have been seeing more of that in recent years. Cover crops would obviously be even better.

So much of this hits home, even in Iowa. So much is geared toward production and very little toward conservation. Not sure how to change this except with his statement about that was something like "conservation paying as well as production". The man should be a lobbyist for conservation groups. It will take tax dollars (government policy) to change things. At least in SD, they do see hunting as a valid income generating activity, so hopefully the right people will take notice of what is happening in your state.

There will be zero significant wetland protections implemented at the state level here in SD as long as republicans hold the majorities in the state house. Hell, the Noem admin all but neutered the department of energy and natural resources by combining it with the state agency it clashed the most with, the department of agriculture. There have been limited success stories though on the conservation side at the state level, with the James River and Big Sioux watershed CREP acres. But if it wasn't for conservation organizations and duck stamp dollars, eastern & central SD would look a lot more like IA and western MN.
