The 2014 South Dakota Hunting Atlas is now out--got mine at Cabelas in Mitchell today.

For those that don't know about this atlas.
1. It's Free--contact SD game fish and parks
2. It is 32 maps of the entire state that show Federal and State Public hunting lands
3. Shows lower lake Oahe Waterfowl hunting areas
4. Shows the Walk-in areas--private lands open for public hunting

You need one if you are going to hunt public land in South Dakota this year.

Come to SD this year. Talked to several landowners in the past week and most feel that chick numbers are up over last year and that while it is still in the recovery mode--pheasant numbers will be up. :)

Only time will tell. :D

SDJIM,
I am looking forward to receiving mine, I heard they weren't coming out until the end of September so I am glad to get your news. I am taking a friend on his first upland out of state hunt this year to South Dakota around Pierre, or really a little north of there. He got a dog and he is being training by a dear friend of ours, Gary Ruppel, and to say he is not excited would be an understatement so I am hoping we do well, but time will tell. Again thanks SDJIM for that info, I will be looking for it to come soon.

atlas

Hello
I am new to this site. Just got a new lab after years without a dog. 12 year old son eat up with bird hunting also. Going to try SD this year 4 days before thanksgiving and a late season. Would you know where I could get a atlas sent to me. Could I get one from the fish and game dept. Also any leads on a pay per gun per day . I have never been to SD. Like to hunt with just the 2 of us and the dog. Thank you in advance.

Suggest looking on this site (Hunting Directory) upper left of the site page. A place to start.

Several sites have hunter minimums, and number of day minimums. Late in the season this may change - worth a call after Dec. 1.

I found asking questins at the local bar(s) or cafe's is very worthwhile. Often farmers will post their calling card on a bulletin board. Check with the local Chamber of Commerce; they may have suggestions for you.

Local motels may have leads for you - they usually know where the action is in their area.

It helps to inquire in person vs a phone call. The first year you may have to devote several hours doing research; from 8-10 in the morning.

Good luck and hunt safe!

thats funny u can get the new 2014 sd hunting atlas in person??? i was on the sd interactive sd atlas it was the 2013 atlas still... same cover pic and all???

the sd hunting atlas has to be published and sent out or in stores available to the public by late august early september i mean the sd prairie grouse season opens early-mid september they would have to have them printed for us by the hunting season... they will be mailed to us on waiting lists by early sept... kinda need that to plan a sd public land hunt...

SDJim - that is great news. Thanks for posting that it's out. Great publication - I lie rally spent hours in it and online last year looking at aerial pics of the huntable grounds.
