South Central Kansas Hunting

I was wondering if anyone had any updates to the bird counts in South Central Kansas, since the thunder of opening weekend has passed. A friend, myself, and our three shorhairs are going to try to make it out that way tomorrow morning for a day or two... just a quick hunt before the holiday.

We're leaving from Parker (around Osawatamie), and are hoping to only drive a few hours... so perhaps around McPherson? I realize the numbers are far better an hour or two further out West, but we're trying to keep the driving to a minimum (if that's possible hunting upland ).

Great forum, by the way! This appears to be a fantastic community.

Just drive faster then you can go farther west. Lol. If you are only goin a couple hours you may wanna try going just west of council grove a ways. Let me know how you do. We usually make at least a couple day trips out there. I live about 20 miles N of you and that's the closest area I know of that has a few pheasants.

I hunted around McPherson, Hillsboro and Hutchinson this past week. All 3 days were on private ground and we got into birds. I would say we didn't see as many pheasants as the past few years, but quail numbers seem to be up where we hunted. It's still pretty wet around the area and some of the ground was unhuntable. Hope this helps.

If the absolute load of trucks and trailers staying on as opening weekend holdovers the Sunday night of the opener is any evidence, it looks as if there might be decent bird numbers around.

Thanks for the heads up guys. Since the forecast was calling for warm weather, and high winds, we decided on a short quail hunt in the Southeast instead. I was really disappointed, as we only came across a few singles in a six-hour period.

Hopefully we'll make it back out West in prior to, or after firearms deer season.
