hearing that people were seeing lots of birds and putting them in the bag, sounds like a great opening weekend...which got me to thinking "what's so different about this year?"

crops out
moisture/precip day before
smart dogs
dumb birds
????

years past my memory leads me to believe there were more "skunked" trips but sounds like everyone got into birds...hope you've left me some for the first weekend in dec...

HOWEVER, me and my dogs kicked up 3 covey of quail on public ground last saturday pm in span of 3 hrs so maybe all this habitat focus and conservation is coming to fruition?

I think the first 2 things you listed had a lot to do with the success. There are smart dogs and dumb birds every opener, but having a bit of moisture, cooler temps, and all of the crops out had much to do with everyone's success. 3 coveys.....that's a pretty good day especially if you didn't have to drive far to get into em'. I plan to hunt SE KS at least once this season. Hopefully the guy I've always hunted on will let me on again this year.
