Shotshell Recommendations

Can anyone suggest a decent factory steel load for pheasants and upland birds in general that I can use on the Federal WPA's? Since it's Federal I can't use lead shot so I'm looking for something effective, inexpensive but yet something that has some reach to it...

If you can afford to pay a little extra, the Hevi-Shot is the best of the non-toxic stuff. I use it sparingly only when required, but HS kills the birds just like lead. As far as "good" steel loads, I'm still looking......................

X2

Actually, I think it kills them deader than lead. Wait, what? :D

I like the Kent Fasteel. I have only used the #4 waterfowl loads but I see they have a product called Upland Fasteel available in #5,6,7 shot. Looking forward to trying it when I need to buy some more shells.

Myself, I would go with the "New" Remington Hyper Sonic. It has out performed all other steel shot I have ever used. Including Black Cloud and all other HV.

Amazing stuff. :10sign:

And at 1700fps Mr Rooster won't even hear the shot. ;)

It's pretty interesting that they have come up with so many different shot shapes as well.

Looks like most missed the "inexpensive" part of your question....:)

The cheapest steel I see is winchester stuff around here--forget the load name but I don't think it's their Drylock load, what I see sells for less than $10 a box. I've not had good luck with it on birds or the pattern board however. The cheapest ammo I consider quality stuff is Kent FastSteel. Depending on guage and shell length but I have seen their stuff for $13-$14 a box. If you shoot a 12, look for 2 3/4" ammo. You don't need 3" for pheasant's if you have a 12 gauge, that load will still throw over an ounce of shot at the birds. Fiochhi also has some steel that I rarely see, but when I do it seems to be down in that Kent price range.

My favorite is Remington Nitro-steel, but they run a few bucks more, as do most of the federal's. Black Cloud, Hyper Steel and all the non-steel non-toxics are even more expensive yet.

Hope this helps!

You can get the Winchester Xpert High Velocity 3" Steel loads at Gander in Duluth for 8.99 a box.

You can get the same for the same price at Reed's, they will also ship them relatively cheaply by the case.

L&M Fleet in Cloquet and Grand Rapids has Black Cloud 3" for 18.99 a box where they are 19.99 - 22.99 at Gander and Cabela's.

Glen's Army Navy in Grand Rapids generally has some good deals too.

Just keep checking around when you know what you want. You will find a good price.
