shoot to retrieve

yesterday went to my first shoot to retrieve but just to watch. sure some of you out there are/were in this same boat. about fifty guys competed. labs and gsp dominated by a wide margin. saw one pudelpointer, one viz, no britts and no springers, don't know why. asked how much it cost, was told this shoot was $145 and the guy quickly stated that " where else can you go and have this much fun and still keep you clothes on" just donno. they hunted 10 min. for 3 birds , using chukars. most shot auto's and hi base 7.5's and all seemed to have their favorites. prize was about $500. all the dogs i saw run were gsp's and all ran pretty well, none of the labs walked at heel, some were pretty pokey but most of them really got with it, a few pointed and some kinda did. don't know why these two breeds dominated at least that day, guess the big shoot is coming up shortly in kansas city. anyway, it was great way to spend the day and surely think if i were younger i would have been there to compete. looked like a hoot. it was held in eastern colorado and is just one of a number of groups that compete

cheers

That does sound like fun!

Bird Hunters United sounds like a good deal as well. I called one of the guys about a month ago and talked with him about it. It's layed back, and sounded like a good opportunity to get the dogs into some birds.

Please do not confuse the title of this thread "shoot to retrieve" with NSTRA (National Shoot To Retrieve Assoication). The event that mustistuff was at sounds like just a fun type competition and maybe not associated with any established organization.

NSTRA is a national field trialing association and our trials are much different than that described in this thread. For one thing, NSTRA is limited to pointing breeds only so Labs (even pointing Labs) would not qualify to run in NSTRA.

I just wanted to clarify that this particular event in Colorado and NSTRA are two entirely different things.

Where was this event at?
What was it called?
Just curious as I ran in a similar event a couple of weeks ago at Black Canyon Wing and Clay in Delta CO.
A Pudelpointer took 2nd in the singles division and third in the doubles division...and we brought home $575:)
