I have searched all through the SD regulations and have not seen how many shells you are allowed in autoloading shotguns for pheasant hunting. Is it the standard 3 or can the plug be removed?

I don't have an answer to your question, but I do want to welcome you to the forum.
 
Bird Buster... You can remove the plug. South Dakota has no shell limit for upland hunting. North Dakota, on the other hand, does have a 3 shell limit for upland hunting. Good luck!
 
Get a tube extension and let em buck. I have a benelli with a tube extension and I hold 11 shells, sure its heavy but tons of fun.

i am with ford. got the benelli with 11 shells. feels like i am carrying a shotgun with a 20lb dumbbell tied on the end. but its better to be over prepared than under prepared carrying only 5 shells
