Hey Guys,Girls, Has anyone tried the SGL's on the east side of York Co. 181,83, 327. I'm thinking about heading there this Sat. I tried 243 last Sat. ( we didn't get any birds ) I know the have to be there. It all comes with experience I guess. Just seeing what ya'll think of those areas.

Dave, it's going to be tough this time of year for pheasants, even with a lot of years experience, a Rooster in the bag is a well earned bird. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't try. Use these outings to scout the area for next season. Find out where the parking areas are, where the hunting pressure will come from, what SGL's will hold some late season birds " not all will, regardless of how many were released" etc.

Spending time with your pup is priceless! This is a great time of year to work on all the basics.By getting out now, by this time next season you two will be a well oiled machine. Yes there are still birds out there. Good luck and be safe.

Be sure to report back and enjoy your outing!

Thanks for the advice. I'll be sure to post the results with or with out a bird.

FLDBRED, you were right. it is tough to find birds. Today a friend and I went to 3 SGLs one of them was 243 ( my fav. so far ) Needless to say no birds in hand but we sure had a great time in the field with the dogs and guns. My 1 y.o. did ok keeping close and for the most part doing as I ask, But his main Problem for the day was, he was getting obsessed over field mice and rabbit nest. as Ideas on how to correct that ?

Dave,

The fact that you guys had a great day afield regardless of whether or not you bagged a bird is really what it's all about.

As far as Dudley is concerned, don't sweat it. He really doesn't know what is expected of him yet. DO NOT REPRIMAND him for using his nose for that at this point. Just pay it no mind and move him along. At some time, your going to want to use game birds for training. Just a few at first, always making a big fuss when he finds one. Then work it so he has to "trail" a bird for a while, again encouraging him along. Believe me, after a few training sessions like this he going to forget all about field mice!

Any day spent in the fields is a good day. Keep at it, you never know when you'll find what you're looking for.
