Some of you will find this funny, seeing as how I didn't start hunting SDak since 92 or 93. But this is all part of my experiences, which are changing along with big farming and loss of habitat.
The cafe in Leola-I don't remember what it was called, but it had a huge mural on the south wall, old fixtures and counters, 2 women cooking, a red headed kid-he took our order, we always had breakfast there on our way west, he sat down with us and talked about goose hunting, playing football on defense and offense. What a joy. Changed hands and madeover, then changed hands and reopened a year or so ago to a saloon with some food and the young woman was a FABULOUS baker-lots of old photos and items. Its closed again already
Eureka-my gosh what happened to the business district? The Lunch Box cafe with the Weber steak-mighty good and mighty reasonable. The German dinner on Weds I remember one meal with watermelon cubes in dill pickle juice. I thought it was bad, my brother loved it. Toms Eureka bakery, once he got to know us he would leave bismarcks un-frosted, and then we'd get them freshly granulated sugar the way we had them growing up. Long gone, I remember once the bismarcks were still hot and the dough hadn't set all the way. man they were good but can you say "grease the skids"?? Hunkering on the prairie with your butt downwind. The oil company in Euerka, one August scouting we got some cantaloupe there-I think they came from Pierre, WOW what a treat in the heat
Once, south of Eureka, I heard a rumble from the back of the truck, looked in my side mirror and then saw my tread rolling along in the ditch next to me. Pulled over, started to change the tire, and a couple of high school kids, boy and a girl, stopped and asked if we needed help. We said thanks but we're OK. I think they were from Hosmer. They said they'd hang around until we were ready to go. What fun it was talking with them as we changed the tire.
That, my friends is what I will miss as much as anything, because greed and money changes most (not all) people.
