got home from a 5 day hunt east central SD wed afternoon only hunted 4 days due to 40-50 mph winds sleet rain snow mix wed... overall we had a good hunt hard hunt but good... ill tell anybody reading bring rubber bootst if u r gonna hunt near sloughs or waterways its wet out there... no corn harvested from fri-sun monday afternoon was 1st combines we seen rolling... 40% corn still up once its off it will be real good hunting in areas we only got up a few bird due to corn standing all around etc...
day 1...
first spot we pull up a WPA i thought would be good due to cut corn & the nice cover on thid wpa pull up its all soy beans??? plus cattle all over & guys driving around on atvs!!!??? wtf??? then 2 guys pull up sd plates & ask if we wanna join in on a walk we agree & meet/hunt/chat with some nice nebraska transplants i hunt NE for turkey each year so we hit it off... that walk only flushed 3 hens my dog & 1 mans vizla got up... got surrounded by 4 truck loads with a dozen guys on that hunt so we parted ways with a handshake & went for our2nd walk of day nearby on a huge public land chunk on way i let my buddy jump a ditch he missed his chance to shoot he forgot the safety was on like 4 times this trip lol poor guy... walked thick grass cattails & crp grass near crops seen 20-30 birds dropped 3 found 2 that day 1 missed a few ez shots so shoulda had more but was still fun... seen alot of hunters sat

day 2...
went west to some spots i did ok b4 pulled up at 10:00 nobody on my end 1 truck on other side of waterway we could not interfear with each other so we hunted... hit a dry dam that always hold birds 5 min in we flush 8 birds 5 roosters no shots fired buddy was stuck in cain grass no shot just herd em flush... long hot walk no shots fired... 2nd area no guys at it but passed 8 truck loads so was leery of hunting it... dove in & walked some crops & tall thick grass near water seen a few birds but across a waterway we worked the area on our side few shots fired no blood yet mid afternoon... walk the area we seen birds go land got into some young birds my buddy kept calling hens... then he missed 2 long tails back to back & dropped & lost another his limit... last 20 min of shooting light a bird cackles & lands near our truck we run over flush em i shoot miss on a right to left slightly raiseing bird dropped a wing/foot on 2nd shot dump em in water my dog was laid up day 2 lame foot? any way my buddy cocker sized springer blind retrieves a rooster who swam flapped across the water way he was stagering around oppasite shore took her a while but she brang back that old bird still alive across 60 yards of water awsome retrieve to say the least... 1 dead bird & some beat up dogs & hunters end of day 2... seen 20 birds maybe... more hunters then birds...
day 3...
stuck closer to cabin this day less warm today just a gray day sun never really came out all day spit rain a lil here & there hunted spot from day 1 wear we seen 30+ birds herd em crowing or cackleing all day... pulled up seen 7 roosters in middle of entrance trail to public land its 10:02 we bail out i take my dog & gun yes i guess i ditch hunted lol run down dog gets birdy no birds flush we walk towards the park n spot pass a trucker haul n corn we think lets move truck only to be asked to do so by next hauler we agreed & went on after we moved truck... bout 30 into hunt in crp next to standing corn my dog go on point my buddy walk in with his dog a bird flush he calls hen i see its a young rooster & head shot it at about 10 feet directly above my head every pellet in head lol hunted there most of day only 1 taken there... hit a 2nd spot duck hunters there we hit the crop edges & oppasite lake shore way away from them they limited out i guess... as we pull up we see rooster in cut corn with cimbine rolling bordering public area go sign! get in 15 min later i got bird 2 nice blind retrive fro. gauge the springer my girl was ready to hunt today she pointed it... kept o going seen combine move 4 deer & a handfull of rooster into a corn strip we could hunt near slough good stuff moved in my girl pointed a few hens then a rooster bust wild after she pointed 3rd hen i dropped it my limit in hand... worked that area & we lost 1 more rooster i did actually felt like crap cuz i didnt want to shoot another bird really but my buddy was like its party hunting so i only worked my dog after that to make it ez... lola my dog locks up near a spot we seen a bird land we walk it up nice bird flush my buddy drop a leg we watch bird climb & die about 150 yards out we run there my dog lock up again 2nd bird flush i thought it was the wounded bird but was a hen... i look & my buddys dog has the rooster already lol great retrieve again by the lil springer near the vehicle my dog lock on point again my buddy says if i shoot & miss shoot ok man he walks up point bird flush a young rooster he miss twice i shoot bird go down my dog retrieve bird & we have 5 birds 10 min left to hunt so we call it a day being i lost 1 prior our limit i said it was a great day after thinking my dog was out of commision day 2...
day 4...
went to area ive got afew birds b4 was a muck hole to say least cattle also maid it damn near un walkable near sloughs or any dry trails lol we flushed 1 super young rooster who did cackle lol but we missed him... said skrew this we gonna explore new area pulled in 10 min later a rooster flys in & lands i cattail/cain grass 80 yards from truck we get dogs run down no flush? 10 min still no bird? we split up each go seperate way down cattails i back track the way bird came from my dog starts track n in the cattails then lock up moves of locks u etc. 3 times then silence i walk into cattails bird flush over water i dump it lola bring it to hand b4 i can say got it buddy... walk some standing soybeans 4ft tall no birds but 1 big buck was in there... we head back with the wind to truck i hit the cain grass & cattails again my dog flash point a bird i walk up nice rooster flush i drop i seen he was pretty as he cackles into the air b4 shot but when i get to bird i look it over hes got double spurs & nice white wings shoulder patches nice white cap on head & thick white ring neck connected near throat hes a mounter to me ill send some pics if sombody wanna post em for me??? any way bird 2 down head to truck to drop mounter off miss 1 more beuty on way back in cain grass surrounded by water i got wet feet daily... lol we work some corn & crp grass but no luck there again so we head back to camp cuz we are close get mixed up on dirt roads & lucky we did we pass a few dumb birds in a ditch my buddy promply ditch hunts up i did not mind him ditch hunting his micro springer was beat he had hurt hips so i told em go for it he shot 3 birds in about 30 min in that area seen 5-7 roosters on 2nd flush he got 2... he says dude how come ur birds have longer tails but the spurs are so big? i look the birds over they all have crooked toes & nostril blinder marks lol short tail long spurs so needless to say he shot released birds i looked my double spured bird over again & his buddy i shot prior 10-15 miles away no blinder marks or crooked toes nice long tails i was releaved to say the least... lol we get to our cabin run into a old local guy nice man health walking he asks our success & shoots the shit with us say lake is killer fishery etc. & by the way u know u can hunt over there? points to a area we seen guys looking at days prior man says go over there i herd em cackle 20 min ago flushed 3 roosters there other day... we call the lady who has cabin info she say yes go hunt there its there for u to hunt so we walk the area and about 20 min later i dump bird #3 a good looking bird... falls in water again dogs search 10 min we cool em down then go at it again for 10 min no bird wet feet again... we walk the corn plot & near the end of plot my dog lock up i walk over grass moves then move going away from us then stop
my dog reposition lock up i walk it up again young rooster flush behinde me i drop em on 2nd shot he pop up & drag his leg & wing into swamp grass i see his tail sticking out as i run up my dog run into to wrong area then come back then the chase was on after 2-3 min of dogs tearing around hot on a running gimp bird my girl dig em up still alive awsome end to a great hard hunt on day 4... 6 birds a 2 man limit today...
day 5...
40-50 mph winds sleet rain snow mix we said 14-15 birds in 4 days hunting is plenty with 40% corn still standing once the corns off it will be pretty damn good hunting in eastern SD nothing like out west numbers wise but if willing to work u can have a good hard hunt... it was not ez just because we were in SD all i can say is go west or south central for more number of pheasants & hunters we wanted to avoid huge crowds & did manage to do so most days... mite have forgot a bird so i say 14-15 lol i count 1 my buddy wrecked by shooting it to close so i say 15... 4 days hunting 12 birds on public 3 ditch dummys... all in all great hard hunt great dog work great hunt it will only improve once corns off in that area...
if you can wait like 2 weeks it be perfect if the weather holds & they can get that corn off b4 rifle deer season people will do better then we did limits will be much more simple to come by trust me... i going back out nov.10 it looking like at this point & time... going west work my way back east hit some new honey holes lol...
