Sd prairie unit turkey hunt thoughts

hey guys been away for awhile had some computer issues & other things going on but any way just thought id get a few of you SD hunters thoughts on something...

im planing on applying for a SD prairie turkey hunt tag & was just seeing if any of you die hard pheasant hunters have seen turkeys on you fall pheasant hunts this past season??? if so is there any area you even drove by & seen some good turkey numbers im mainly focusing on west pf the MO river actually im only looking at hunting west of the MO river i do understand that you all would of been hunting pheasant cover but i do know there is creeks crops & roost trees available in many areas & some of the best SD pheasant areas hold turkeys as well???

im real interested in any areas along the white river or the cheyenne river??? actually any major river with good numbers of birds & some public lands im not a private land door knocker so???

thanks guys & any info good bad or in between would be much appreciated

Have seen lots of turkeys along the Cheyene river in SW SD in the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands over the years. Access is fun but it is public land. I would look between WY border and !90 crossing. You will need a map (current) as land swaps from private and public happen all the time. The Grasslands office in Wall SD has current maps. Other possibilites include the Ft. Pierre Nat. Grasslands(just south of Pierre SD) and the Grand River Nat. Grasslands in north central SD (Lemmon SD has a grasslands office).

Public school lands also have potential and maps can be ordered form the state office in Pierre by county. Check the Game Fish and Parks web site as I think they list the map sources.

Carpenter and mouth of White River area has a good bit of public hunting ground that is rough, tough to get around on but lots of turkey. Look at Lyman Co. in Atlas south of Ocoma.

turkeys west river

here is a vidio I took at nearly dark west river near chaimberlain on the white river, this was in 2009 but should still be a great place. These turkeys are flying from a private cut corn field down into public land on the white river. nearly as many as I caught on film had already flown down before I turned the camera on. There is a lot of woods on public ground along the white river here.
