The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced that one of their policy options under consideration is to drop Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) enrollment to 24 million acres nationwide. In Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever's view, this is completely unacceptable and we urge all of our members and supporters to take immediate action by contacting the USDA in opposition of this proposal. Additionally, Pheasants Forever considers the current 32 million acre CRP cap a short term goal, and recommends the USDA request Congressional authority to expand the program to a minimum of 40 million acres

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm Service Agency (FSA) has asked the public for comments on the Conservation Reserve Program and scheduled meetings through October 8th to solicit comments on the program. Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever have some simple suggestions for what to communicate during the public comment period and at the public meetings:

â?¢ Request USDA implement CRP at its maximum acreage of 32 million acres, and that USDA request additional authority for an expanded CRP of at least 40 million acres from Congress. â?¢ Call for a new CRP General Signup â?¢ Call for new authority for Continuous CRP programs such as CRP SAFE and CRP Upland Bird Habitat Buffers â?¢ Ask that all Continuous CRP including CRP SAFE and CRP Upland Bird Habitat Buffers, be made available to all expiring contract holders â?¢ Call on USDA to implement a CRP "Open Fields" Public Access program immediately â?¢ Encourage USDA to enroll expired CRP into the Grasslands Reserve Program and the Conservation Stewardship Program

Chris

Email is on the way. Maybe WEBGUY could do a sticky on this.

Wouldn't hurt if everyone backed up their response to the Ag Department with a call and/or email to their congressman and senators. They can put pressure on too if their constituents demand it.

Based on the aggressive change in posture from the dept. lackeys I have a bad feeling the Big Ag boys from Illinois (ADM, Staley etc.) are starting to call in favors for campaign support to the new administration.

I am absolutely terrified by what this administration will do, not only with CRP, but many other things. Please take time to send an email so we can voice our thoughts on this issue.

Action Alternative 1 or Action Alternative 2

It was made very clear at the Manhattan, Kansas meeting that they ONLY thing to be discussed at the meeting was Action Alternative 1 or Action Alternative 2. The moderator went through the entire Scoping Slides, then again, said only Alternative 1 or Alternative 2.

Here is a link-

http://public.geo-marine.com/presentation.aspx?id=45

Then click the bottom of the page(CRP Supplemental EIS Public Meeting Presentation). This is a PDF file. Starting at Page 11, you will see a side by side comparsion of Alternative 1 and Alternative 2.

Even though the moderator emphasized responding only to Action Alternative 1 or Action Alternative 2, there were plenty of comments that the numbers should be increased above those in Alternative 1. Also, she(the moderator) did not want any long statements, just a summary and turn in written statements. The first to speak was a rancher from Alma, Kansas with no CRP acres, but he gave a passionate presentation to leave the grass that has been established alone. He was the only speaker to receive an ovation.

The CRP program has been the most successful conservation program in our country's history. In my opinion we have come a long way to get to this point and it would be a shame to go backwards. I believe the health of our country, especially our prairies, can be measured in the health of the critters that call it home and we are much better off than we were in 1985(pre CRP), except one notable exception is the depletion of the Ogallah aquifer.

Whatever you thoughts, now is the time to express them. October 19th is the deadline.

Maynard,

Thanks for posting the meeting notes. The detail on Alt 1 and Alt 2 is good. Clearly we all want Alt 1 or better. Alt 2 would be bad!

Guys, please continue to send in your votes in support of Alternative 1.

Crp

My email has been sent.

I am contacting my legislators too.

How many of us would pay an annual $100 (or more) "tax" to be able to hunt in CRP land in your own state?

I would.

Done. For those of you who haven't done this yet, it only takes a minute to copy the email address and state that you're in support for Alternative 1.

Time to find our state representatives' contact info again......
