Ruffed Grouse

Surprisingly enough my brother in law, saw a pair of ruffed grouse near Manchester, close to the river! They were in the open on a cleared patch of grass, above copious snow! Close enough to timber along the river bank to escape too! Never though they were that far distributed I the state of Iowa? But he specialized in birds, I am sure he knows his stuff!

Shot grouse when I lived in northeast Iowa and around the Guttenberg area. They have very specific woodland habitat that they require to thrive.

An awesome bird to hunt on the wing but the exact opposite on the ground. I was never impressed with their ability to sit and stare at the dog an I. That said, hunting the ravines of Clayton and Allamakee county made a man of you quick and you appreciated connecting on your quarry.

You will never dine on a more tasty bird. They are fantastic on the table!:)

Early in the season here while the leaves are still on the young birds will sometimes fly into trees. Later as birds mature and leaves fallen it would be rare to have a ruff flutter up into a tree.

its been 7 or so years since my last ruffy hunt, this thread just gave me an awful nasty itch to venture north to wisconsin or minn. this september. so who is holding more ruffs? wis. or minn.
