Rookie Pheasant hunter going to Kansas

Well, I'm kind of a rookie. I actually hunted pheasant for the first time this past Monday and Tuesday in the Texas panhandle. We saw about 20 birds total but most flushed out of range. I learned alot on that hunt but now we are heading to Kansas on Jan. 12-14th to try our hand at pheasant again. Any tips are appreciated! I also wanted to ask if there are any decent, affordable(cheap) hotels in Kiowa or Hodgeman counties that you guys would recommend.

Ah... another Texan headed to Kansas, sounds familiar :D

Just got back from hunting around Kiowa County earlier this week. We saw a lot of birds, considering the weather and lack of moisture. I'm definitely going to plan a return trip earlier in the season next year.

We set up shop in Pratt, and stayed at the Evergreen Inn. Very nice place on the West side of town that some of the boys here on the forums recommended to me.

There are tons of nice grass patches to hunt North and South of Greensburg. There's also a hotel there, but it's brand new, so it may be a bit pricier. Unfortunately, a EF5 tornado blew through Greensburg about 4 years ago, and destroyed the entire town. They're still rebuilding.

There is a new hotel in Jetmore but I don't know the rates.

Not sure if it's close enough, but in Dodge City I stay at the Thunderbird Motel. The rooms are clean, they take dogs, and the rates are CHEAP! Hope you enjoy your trip to Kansas.

Wish we could make it but our dates are locked in. We will be in Kansas the morning of the 15th but will need to head back home by noon or so.

On another note, I'm having a hard time picking an area. Trying to decide between Pratt, Meade or Dodge City areas. Any thoughts?

I didn't make it as far as Meade last week, but Greensburg isn't far away, and the numbers were good South of there.

I'd have to say you'd run into plenty if you set up shop in Meade.

If you decide on Dodge, you may want to consider heading north toward Jetmore.

Looks like we decided on the Meade area. Any hotel recommendations for Meade?
