road conditions

Heading out to NW Kansas this weekend to chase some phez and was wondering what the road conditions were like in that part of the state?

Good luck! Left Denver yesterday around noon. Headed to a field just outside of town where we stay got a 1/2 mile from the highway and turned around. It was a mess and didn't feel like getting stuck. Checked another road same thing. Stayed the night and got back into Denver at noon today. Fields are the same as the roads pure mud. Temps for today mid 40's and rain.

The elevated, improved roads are OK. The grade roads are all mud.

The gravel maintained roads near marysville were decent. The non-maintained dirt roads were impassible today. Luckily, we had gravel roads to the edge of our property. Parked at one corner and started walking. Pretty sloppy out, but put up 2 coveys along the road sunning this morning.

Road Conditions Near Oakley

Hello,
I was thinking about a two day hunt near Oakley, south to Wakeeny, and back. Looking at the weather pattern, there seems to be a line close to my planned hunt where there was less moisture. Can anyone give me a report on the roads where I plan on hunting.
If they are bad, I can move my hunt further south.
I have never hunted the Cimarron grass lands, but if the road are better there I could change my hunt.

Thank for any information.
P.S. I have winter tires for Colorado, but not true off road or mud tires

I don't think the roads will cause you many problems anywhere now. They may be a little rough from being rutted up last weekend if they haven't been drug.

Personally I wouldn't waste my time near Wakeeny/Hill City

Is that because of roads, cover, or just plain lack of birds?
Would you suggest north or south?

Thank you,

Bruce

The roads will be fine, the bird numbers are better farther south. IMO draw a line from Great Bend to Garden City and hunt south of it. They received more rain in 15 that further north, and the birds began their rebound a year earlier. With that said there are good pockets of birds further north than than, I have been in a few.

I appreciate the tips

Thank you,
This helps as I did not make a motel reservation, as I was waiting on some good information.

Much appreciated,

Bruce

We actually did really well around hill city. The right cover and feed and the birds where there. It was goodnhunting this year compared to the last couple.

I should ad that we hunted mostly private ground. But did find a couple good wiha fields that was holding a nice bunch of birds

Nhill city area I did quite well myself, cant agree more with the habitat statement. There was a great mix of food/cover. I slayed what made my trip worthy around there.

I was pretty picky. We ended up in Norton Co trying to find birds. I'll put it this way I drove 4.5 hrs to get there and the hunting was so poor I drove 4.5 hrs back home at sunset. Buddy lives near Plainville and wandered why I bothered. Said quail came back but pheasants were spotty and poor in most areas.

Conditions near Wakeeny 01/28/2017

I want to thank everyone for their input. I did not have the time to drive down to Dodge City area, so I just went for a day trip from Colby to Wakeeny. This was Saturday. The conditions were very dry, even had quite a bit of dust as I drove on the county roads. There were several WIHA areas that had great cover, but it was very windy and the air was dry. The pheasants were very spooky, and this was expected, but I saw pheasants flush 150 yards away just by stopping on a road and looking, not even opening my car door.
I did manage one point by my young English Setter, but it was a hen.
I saw so many WIHA that were corn stubble. Not sure why those areas are enrolled. I like wheat stubble (mid calf high), milo stubble, but corn stubble ankle high?
Again, thanks for the replies, and I will check out the Garden City to Dodge City next season. At least I have my 2017 license ready for next season.

I watched 150 birds flush and go into a Corn stalk WIHA. One would think you could spot them in the sparse cover and open rows.. Not a chance. It was almost dark before I saw some headed back to the CRP. Impossible for 1 or 2 guys to do much except push the pheasants out 300 yds ahead of you if they don't decide to just run way around you in those large corn stalk fields. But they are there!! 20 guys with some blockers it would suit fine but I don't have that many friends!!lol Or choose to hunt with an army.
