Report from Yuma

Just in from a l-o-n-g drive home, but what a beauty it was. I have to say, Hwy 285 South from Denver to Durango has got to be one of the best drives in the state.

So.. on to the report. This will be short as I still have a car to unload and pups to feed. (the truth is, I am beat tired) I must have hit every walk in south of Yuma to Joes then around to Wray. The birds were nervous and flighty. I managed to bag two, but must have flushed a 30 hens. Hunting was tough as expected after opening weekend. It was great and dissapointing at the same time. I was so content to be out with my dogs, but dissapointed at the trash at the walk-ins. I got my limit in beer bottles at half of the stops. Most bottles were within 1/4 mile of the access points. I suppose it was just about the right distance to open one up and guzzle one down before throwing the empty on the road. I felt like I was in a city park and not the "country" I sought with this trip.

There is another post going on about landowners/local viewpoints on the weekend "Denver Sweep". I will hold my tongue right now, but maybe will add to that thread as I spoke with a few landowners who share the same thoughts as the original poster.

I am not sure I will hunt CO before December again.

G'night

Curious... did you hunt by yourself? Dog? Might head that way this weekend by myself or with one buddy...

It never ceases to amaze me the way some people act... But good for you picking up trash you did see. I don't like "big brother" telling us what to do... but at the same time, it is amazing how much trash directly attributes itself to alcohol or cigarettes.

Regarding the trash; that sucks. What a disrespectful thing to do to landowners. I think if DOW would charge for a walk in permit (as they used to), you'd see less of this non-sense.

agreed!
i was all for the extra money for the walk in permit! the second i heard they were just combining it with the small game tag and no extra charge i was worried that the WIA fields might just get over run with people. i havent been out yet this year, but im heading out this next Tuesday, hopefully during the week there wont be much for crowds.

The simple things....

What a pleasure it is to enjoy a day afield with ones bird dog. What a privelige it is to be able to walk on private land offered to the WIA program by a hard working landowner. What a shame it is to see gross disrespect for another's land. It really is a very easy thing to remember.... Leave it better than u found it and only deposit footprints. Give way to farm equipment and trucks, they're at work not out havin fun hunting. Not to mention, IT'S WHAT YOUR SUPPOSED TO DO for many reasons. If you see rule breakers, call cdow, don't create confrontations. If harvesting is in process, STAY OUT! Park on the far SIDE of the roads so big equipment can pass. ASK to hunt private property.

Simple things my dad and his dad passed down, along with an 870 Wingmaster. There are plenty of birds out this year, let's hope for some weather to push em together.

Remember to adhere to bag limits and don't shoot hens. I've seen some shady posts on this forum about obscene bird counts. Remember, we are sportsman AND conservationists. It's a privelige to hunt and comes with the responsibility to preserve and protect our resources.

That being said, come Friday morning at 3am my wife and daughter will be up for shopping and I'll be feeding my Lab Riley (Don Riley De Babalou-JH ) and heading for Yuma and Holyoke with my twin brother and his choco Marley to join 7 other crooked shot pals. We call it black and bird Friday. A great Tradition for many years.

Enjoy Thankgiving with your families and remember to give Thanks and appreciation to a serviceman somewhere. The most thanks go to our all loving, all powerful Heavenly Father. He makes everything possible. :10sign::)

Sorry to hear of the disrespectful littering. I understand a beer after hunting... but during it? For me it would detract from the experience, not to mention from being a safe and good wingshot.

Well said, Yeller, and have a great hunt!

I agree Yeller! Well stated!
Also, Chadsbrit: I agree, go back to charging seperately for the access program. I personally believe hunting respect and discipline was better at that time. The DOW could charge double what they used to and that would be fine with me. Keep the respectful hunters in the field!
16 gauged: Other than the trash, glad you had a good hunt!

No disagreement here. I am a strong proponent of "User" fees whether hiking, camping, fishing, WIA's. Why charge people who don't use it or for that matter repect it.

Ive always said you can find your way to a pig farm by following the beer cans the Mexicans throw out. Opening weekend I hunted with a boatload of locals. Everywhere we went those guys were. pitchin cans out the window ......just sayin

We cannot lay poor disrespectful behavior on one ethnicity. We all have to be vigilant in our actions in these towns and on these lands. Yes there are those that make it harder on the rest of us but that means we have to be put more into it to make up the difference. A lot of us think that if we leave no trace we are doing our part. I disagree, we need to leave a trace of recpect, compassion and friends. We need to have these communities want us back, not just for the money but because they like to interact with us. Its the little things, being friendly and discussing the day to the cashier at the gas station, gracious to the waitress, not spitting in public, cleaning up after your dog. It is the little things people notice and we have a target on us as outsiders. Some or most on this forum do the things that benifit the whole group but if we all do a little more then these communities and land owners will welcome us back as friends.

GROW UP ! Maybe we should all let the so called "Mexicans" look you up in the middle of town in the park. (was that Yuma where you camp) ? How Big are you now ? You can't hide behind a putter. I'm just saying ....

If you where with a bunch or a boatload of locals you would have known where the so called Mexicans lived and you would have called Jeff ( warden ) down the road. So stop all your chit, and let people live.

It sounds like your the problem.

Grow up

This has got to be one of the dumbest things I've seen on this forum. There is no place for these attitudes...just sayin.

My point being its not just hunters throwin beer cans around. And maybe the Mexican comment was politically incorrect, how bout Spanish speaking immigrants from down south that work for the pig farm .

At least we know who the KKK boys/punks are.

"he did a good job of being racist", and people on here have respect for you Eng??? Not sure why.

well p buster!!!! im not the kkk but its not a subject for here!!!!!!! I will make sure and shoot me some roosters though. There has to be a couple of outlaws on this site to keep it entertaining rather than wheres the gps coordinates of some birds. I have worked with almost every race. I have friends of almost every race. Just not gonna play the race card. I have a feeling that cowdog was trying to piss some people off its achieved. So lets get on with yuma county hunting!!!!!! Crowds have dwindled Im loving that most people went back to where they belong. Thats a positive no negative!!!!!! 99 percent of the bs stopped between one weekend to the next. Have read alot of posts. Lot of feedback. My main concern is how to stop the weekend warrior for once a year to just stay home. Be curious to see how the ball rolls on the replies.
