Report from SW Minnesota

I have a friend in the Twin Cities that I hunt with a few times a year in the Canby area. He wanted to come out for one more hunt this year but with the recent snow that area got I told him to wait until I could check things out. I called a couple of landowners whose land I hunt and was told things were not good but I could come and try if I wanted. So this morning I drove over and scouted out the area between Canby and Hendricks. They got around 15 inches this past weekend with wind. I'm sorry to report that for all practical purposes that pheasant hunting in the area is over for this year. Any grass is totally covered and the cattails are blown full. I made an attempt to get to a couple of cattail sloughs and just about killed myself and the dog. Snow was knee to thigh deep with a hard crust due to the blowing. Almost impossible to navigate through and then when you do get into some cattails it's no better. And there are no birds there anyway. Saw a few birds around some farm yards by the trees but none out in the open. Could have shot a couple but decided to leave them for next year.

So if anyone is planning to head in that direction yet this year you may want to reconsider.

I was out with a group of 5 guys 6 dogs on the 8th. Let's just say it was a good day for a walk with the dogs! My Gsp HAWK did end up giving a rock solid point on the only Rooster we seen until the group split up:D Sw minny has birds but not in great numbers ill leave the birds in that part alone until next year

Thanks

I had a trip all planned in that area but will cancel due to conditions. Might be done for this season. Wanted to get the dog out one more time, darn.

Weren't you going more to the Milbank, SD area? We had 8 inches here in Watertown. Not sure what Milbank got. It's not nearly as bad around here as in the Canby/Hendricks, MN area. But I haven't been out around here yet either. Maybe try to get out a little on Friday.

Had buddy hunt south of Pipestone and shot a limit in no time. Not as much snow there.

Milbank

I was going to start in altamont and work my way up to Milbank, but I figured that they got hit just as hard they did in the Canby area, but maybe that's not the case. Please keep in touch about snow depth and conditions in that corridor. I still would really like to make the trip.

I hunted the Worthington to Luverne area over Thanksgiving weekend and saw a few hens and roosters from a distance and the only thing I shot was a coyote the dog kicked up out of a slough. My farmer friends whose land I hunt on reported seeing very few birds in that area during combining (apparently due to the drought). Apparently they are farther north towards Marshall and up. I'm not going back there any more this year regardless of the snow level.
