Rattle Snake Replant For Our Dogs

We have been hunting in SD for 13 years now, never had a problem with snake bites, just those nasty hidden pieces of rusty barbed wire that the dogs rip their skin open on, i guess we have been lucky.
Some things have changed a little over the years, it seem to be getting hotter, and hotter! And now we are running more dogs, about 10 GSP to be exact.
I have heard of a product that is on the market which slows down the venium but you still have to get your dog to the vet as fast as possible( of course), Has anybody ever had to use such a product, and if so what are your thoughts??

Anybody??? Has anybody ever used a snake repellent on their dogs, it will be our first time?? Thank You.

No, Andy, sorry I haven't heard of anything like this. I simply choose not to go early in the season so I don't have this issue. My dogs mean too much to me to put them in harms way. There are people that train dogs to avoid snakes(see related threads). Good luck, let us know if you find anything.

Sorry that i have to respond to this in a negative fashion but we have been breeding German Shorthaired Pointers since 1980. I want to thank you for reaching out to me but as i stated we do not go out opening week, one of the reasons is because its a dog and pony show, (no pun intended) and for the other reason is as you just stated.
We hunt about 9000 acres in three weeks rotating the dogs to keep them cool. Bird hunting is a passion of ours because of the dogs, kind of like duck hunting on the Chesapeake Bay, love the labs, and i really miss it.
We have never lost a dog and run about 10 when we go out. So its because we care so much that i am asking on this forum. Thanks for your help. But i will let all of you know.

Cheers,

There is a rattlesnake vaccine available; ask your vet. My partner had his dog vaccinated (requires 2 visits); I declined, as I don't run my dog in snake country while they're active. Can't tell you whether or not it makes a difference; you DO need to rush to a vet in either case.

Thanks for getting back to me, oh and thank your buddy for me. I know that you have to rush them to the Vet, but that initial shot will really help your dog out.
We also stay clear of the dog towns and many of the plumb thickets, as they do hold many bids they could also hold snakes that we cannot see.

I will pass this on the rest of the gang, also we will speak with the farmers and ask them their advice just where to stay away from. Normally we just dont have any worries but one can never tell.
Thank you for your response.

This November will be my 2nd trip to S D. We will be running 3 shorthairs so we share your passion, Andy. What is your kennel name, what kind of bloodlines, and where you at, looking for pup after this season.
We will be hunting all public this time. When is the latest anyone has seen rattlers in South Dakota? Perhaps we should start a seperate thread exclusively for reporting rattle snake sightings including date. time and location to prevent any dog harm.

Hello,

My Cousin and one of our really good buddies are out of Oakland Md, their Dogs have great blood lines and they really spend a great deal of time with them. I know that our friend would never sell a pup to anybody that he felt wasn't going to a good hunting home.
Our friend is the breeder, not my Cousin but the dogs are spread through out our hunting club, and the Country as well...I must add that my friend doesnt do it for a living, he doesnt have to, he has just always loved dogs and bird hunting. His part time job is running a hunting preserve, so his dogs are always over roosters!!
His stock is outstanding, you put the time into a pup that has decent blood lines and you will have a outstanding animal every time, totally up to you.
They are members of the Ruffed grouse federation and hunt them in the trials as well, the dogs never stand idle. There are some great professional kennels out there, we are just blessed to have them in our club!!
If there were no GSH pointers i wouldn't hunt pheasant.
