Thoughts on shooting rabbits in front of your bird dogs? Or how do you handle them chasing, pointing fuzz butts. Personally I tell my dog no, and occasionally hit the collar, I'm not gunna shoot and tell anyone hunting with my dog no f'n rabbits.

Don't shoot anything on the ground , the dogs are way faster then most people's reflexes.
That is always my worry. Same with a cripple. So many times, when she is hunting, I think I know where she is and she is somewhere completely different. And even if I see her and know she isn't by the rabbit or bird, by the time I focus back on the animal, get the gun up, point, and shoot, she could have also seen it and pounced.

In front of? Never. Behind me when the dog isnt looking? Every single time. I tell him no bird and sit him while i go retrieve it and put it away.

Mine doesnt chase rabbits, he stops and watches them run off. So no help in how to stop that

Tell them no. Nick them if I need to. Had a guy years ago shoot a jackrabbit in front of my bird dog. It squealed and she freaked out. I had steam coming out of my ears. Other than that I’ve never had one shot in front of my dogs.

My old man said
Come show me that
Show you what? A collar conditioned well mannered dog that is trained to not chase everything under the sun?

Would you be surprised to learn he sits/freezes on my shot and waits to be sent for the bird? 😉

Its a crazy thing I know, training a dog to listen and not just chase every bird/critter that flushes/runs. Not many do that anymore. I hunted with a guy whose dog chases birds last year, ruined an entire hunt. He got on a cripple from previous hunters and busted an entire food plot we were going to hunt becase "i cant call him off a bird". Flushing up every bird in there 200-300 yards ahead while we all stood there dumbfounded

I could have safely shot a lot of rabbits over the years. But I have only shot maybe a handful and a half. Just not something I do. I’m not hunting rabbits , yotes , coons , dillos. Although I’ve shot a few and left them lay. I feel dirty. . The dogs aren’t actively hunting any of these. It’s just killin. I don’t have a problem jump shooting ducks. But there’s a little dog work involved. So maybe that’s where I draw the line.
In other countries and some guys here fur is part of the game. That’s great, their dogs they came utilize them how they want.

Yep,I'm watching to keep my puppy closer.Sometimes he goes way ahead, and I hide in the trees and pass shoot. It works if you wear camo.

Mine don't chase rabbits or deer. Steady to flush. Steady to shot. Not Steady to fall but can be stopped if it's another dog's retrieve.
