Questions regarding aerial photos

What, if anything, are folks looking for in the areal photos that are in the public Atlas in states like Nebraska, Kansas, South Dakota, etc?
It seems to me that the areal may be old (a couple years). It also seems nothing is going to beat a drive by.

Aerials are a good tool to use in scouting from home. I'm looking for certain features and can exclude some areas based on what I see in the aerials. Then follow up with on the ground or drive by recon.

Over the weekend I scouted some new ground for potential deer hunting. Hunted the area. Max pointed a couple grouse. This morning I brought up the satellite again to confirm some things I saw on the ground. Helps commit that stuff to memory.

On my mapping software i've got multiple layers for scouting. Differs by species, like grouse or pheasant are differents layers for me.

Pheasant I use: terrain/road view basemaps, public/wma layer, wetland cover layer, crop cover layer, and then search those maps based on where i've been (relation to what i'm seeing on aerial view) and where I want to go (wetland/crop layers).

Grouse I use: terrain/road view basemap, public/wma layer, forest view layer (age/species), wetland cover layer

It's been extremely helpful in putting less miles on the truck, even then sometimes I strike out...but always note what i saw mentally so when I go back to my aerial maps I can understand what to avoid next time. I plot the spots I want to check out on my phone and delete if they stink. Have a pretty good selection of spots built up now for pheasant in ND and Grouse in MN...but those are just my applications. I've been working on selling the maps I created as they are valuable in the combination I use them and with more states there may be more interest.
