Question On GPS Download from SD GFP

I have last years maps downloaded to my handheld, and my Garmin Nuvi. When I download this years maps, does it automatically update them, or save it as a new map? I've read all the instructions, but I don't see anything about if it overlays last years map or not. I have a Garmin Nuvi and an Oregon 450T.
 
It looks like it's updated. I don't see an option to select last years. Why would you anyway? You risk hunting on private land.
