Question of the day from new guy to the seasoned hunters

Hello,
As the new guy I would like to thank this forum for the opportunity to get my questions posted. I'm new to hunting though for years always fascinated by the true sport of upland bird hunting. I have a yr old weim that has a hunters drive. I would like to ask if you were going to start bird hunting with a dog and were new to an area where would start to get prepared? My next of many questions is on using pigeons. Have you ever order wings and dead pigeons for the dog to get more comfortable and interested? Is the any places to get pigeons in Washington around Seattle area? I need training with my dog to work the dog in the field, is there any groups that work on training both the dog and a new hunter in the arts of upland hunting?
I think that's a good start for me for questions. I thank you again for your time and hope for any wisdom.

Welcome Eric,
There are lots of good reference material to help with your questions. Every trainer and dog owner have different thoughts of where to begin. One reference that I used was Speed Triaining your Bird Dog, by Larry Mueller. I am not sure if it is in print. Make sure your dog is up on its basics, i.e. come, heel, etc. The first year is for the dog to see birds as fun, not work. That is using live birds for the pup to chase. From here find a good book or trainer , who will help you progress through the various stages. Good luck and welcome. Steve
