OP
my advice is let your dog hunt he's young and he's going to make some mistakes and that's OK don't expect perfection
when he points don't walk up behind him and right past him to get to the bird instead swing out on the down wind side in an arc and come in from the side toward the point.
if you walk up behind him and pass along his side him he will want to walk ahead of you or run in and flush the birds, it's just something young dogs do
so try and swing out about 15 yards then in from the side when it's possible , (you go to the downwind side because birds will always flush into the wind and then turn back with the wind and go with the wind when they fly away )
if he holds points and let you flush the bird shoot one for him and make a big fuss out of him about what a good dog he is
if while you're walking toward the birds he breaks and runs in and flushes them don't say anything don't discipline him just move on
if you repeat this scenario over and over he will soon learn that if he holds point he gets a bird and if he flushes nothing happens
and then he will start holding points
many if not most of his points will be anywhere from 50 to 250 yards away from where you're standing, where a physical check cord has no value
from your description your dog is ready to start learning on the job good luck sounds like a nice dog
