Can anyone help me out?
I just moved to Shawnee Ks. a few weeks ago and am looking for a close place to take my dog for 1/2 to 1 hr. runs to burn off excess energy between hunts and after the season ends. Any areas where I can do bird work? I appreciate any info you can give me. Also any recommendations for a good game preserve.
Also wondering if there are any field trials held in the surrounding areas.

Thanks, Terry

years ago i did that once or twice , it was horrable never seen so many people with dogs that were outa control, would go to Hillsdale and work your dog there befor subjecting mine to that , just my 2 cents Good Luck

If you stay away from weekend afternoons, shawnee mission park is fine. There are some grassy areas to work the dog a little, and the lake to do a little swimming. I go about 2-3 times a week throughout the spring and summer. Hit it about 6-7 in the evening on the weekdays and it's not too bad. Watch for copperheads when it gets dark. I have seen a couple monster ones and a couple dogs seem to get bit every year.

Thanks for the info everyone.

Oneball.
What is available in Hillsdale to run a dog. Not familiar with this area yet.

Thanks
Terry

There is a park that is located very close to western Shawnee that not many people know about and there is no leash law. It is located on the west side of K-7. It is on the same road as the Grass Pad and there is an auction house back in there. The park is down the road from the auction house. There are trails in the woods and you can even walk all the way down to the river where there is a sand bar. I take my dog there at least once a month. I have never seen any birds but there is plenty of room for the dogs to run themselves out.

Shawnee Mission Park is ok. It gets a lot of traffic, so watch your step. :D Crummy weather, weekdays, whatever are better. Nice Saturdays/Sundays will be packed, but you can still curl off the main trail and avoid the masses. It's a pretty park.

Eckman's Hunting Preserve in Baldwin, KS is pretty close. Mike is pretty flexible and will set up a situation to your specifications.
