Prairie grouse trip

Magical birds on the prairie winds. Walking into a covey of Huns in a cut wheat field is over the top of my bird hunting experiences. The flush is the rush. Wish everyone the chance to follow the prairie birds. (y) (y)

You won't regret taking a trip for prairie birds, just do it.

Hunted quail and pheasant since I was a kid (55 now), and took my first trip to ND for sharptails and huns in '20. Had a great trip, went back in '21 and '22, and it's gotten better each time.
Pheasant will always be my favorite, but at this point if I was only able to take one trip per season, it would be Sept for sharpies & huns. That's how much I enjoy it.
Heat can be an issue with the dogs, but on warm days I use the afternoons to drive around scouting different spots. And then one walk in the evening to finish the day. I only have one dog, and last year we hunted 10 out of 13 days.

Both birds are tasty, but I particularly like sharptails. They're my favorite bird to eat by a considerable margin.

I packed up and went to Montana last year for the first time with just my 3 shorthairs and myself. I camped in a pop up tent wherever I ended up for the day and cooked what I killed with the exception of steaks I brought for a couple nights. It was honestly some of the most relaxing time I have ever spent hunting. The prairies are beautiful and just a must do. Here are some pictures. (White is "Kay" Gray Beard is "Sully" and liver Roan is "Dutchess". Sully is a rescue.) I also want to add that I reached out to a couple members on here and they were very helpful in providing guidance on this trip. I greatly appreciate their help.

I will be leaving my gray bearded male "Sully" at home this year for Montana and taking the young gun "Cora" for her very first wild bird experience.. Sully will still go to the thicker cover hunts in SD, but wide open is not his gig.
