Post Your Best Hunt Ever

I posted this about 4 years ago, but I thought I would post it again. It was a fun thread.

Year: 1991

Location: Near Delmont South Dakota

Hunters: My dad, my dads friend, myself, two bozos from Wisconson that we met at the bar, 2 locals that took us out for free.

The hunt: The locals said to meet them on Sat at the bar around noon, and they would take up hunting. They showed up about 1:00 and wanted to get something to eat. So about 2:00 we finially head out. We stop next to a 160acre picked corn field. I'm thinking, "we waited around for two hours to hunt a picked corn field?" The locals tell us to walk 1/2 mile through the picked corn sneak over to the end and that there are a few rows of corn the farmer left. Next to these rows is about 25 foot wide grass strip to the property line. It looked decent but not great.

The results: In that one 1/2 mile pass of standing corn about 10 rows wide with 5 walkers and 2 blockers we shot 21 roosters, and missed at least twice that many.

The funny part: The two bozos from Wisconson didn't shoot any birds but after each volley they would ask us, "hey dar, anybody else shoot?"

Since no one else will weigh in...

My best hunt is the next one. Someone once told me "the best part of hunting or fishing is GOING" Hard for me to argue with that logic.

Mines a duck hunt. The Mallards were coming through in waves stopping to feed in my neighbors field. Me and my brother got permission and hunted it the next morning. Were crawling in the picked corn when my brother asked me where the ducks I was thinking are you blind they were running down the rows feeding right by us. We jumped up and shot looked like the sky was falling. He shot 3 with 3 shots he shot north. all I had was a single shot 10 gauge 5 ducks one shot that I found (I shot south). Next morning got 4 with one shot not bad for a 2 day hunt 1/2 hour total time hunting. Farmer still laughs about that. He watched from his pickup. Always tells me gun was bigger and fatter then you were:D

For me it would be my first trip to IA with my current Springer in 2005. I got him when he was 13 months old because of an issue at his former owner's house of not being able to get along with their other dog. Had never seen a bird and had spent most of his time in a box in the house. Got him in Sept. and promptly bought 10 birds and placed them on training grounds to see what he did. Did well enough with those to earn the ride to IA in November. Spent the first half of the first day sort of lost and wondering what to do. We got to a drainage ditch and posted 2 on the end and then went up both sides of it. As luck would have it the side we were on had 5 roosters about perfectly spaced along the 3/4 mile stretch. There was not much cover and a plowed field to the side that everyone of them flew towards and he went down that stretch and flushed and retreived everyone of them. Could see the light really come on after about the 2nd or 3rd bird and believe that experience is what made him the dog he is today. Still brings a smile to my face.

My brother and I were driving around after a morning hunt for ducks near Moses Lake when I noticed hundreds landing in a large pond. We stopped and asked for permission and were told " close the gate behind you". All the birds flushed and then started coming back a few at a time. We ended up with a 2 man limit of 14.

I agree with Browning that's for sure.
With that said and after reading everybody's posts. I think for me it is my dogs pointing (the best), then me winging the bird and it flies off then starts running way off in the distance. Then my dog takes off and chases it down and then the long haul back carrying it to me while I just stand there laughing at the foot chase which just happened...
