planting problems

Been talking to the farmers I know in the Mitchell/Huron area...looks like it will take a miracle for the corn to get fully planted...alot of them will hope to plant beans again this year on last year's bean fields if they can't get the corn in by 6/2 or so...sounds like crop insurance starts to get docked if it doesn't get planted by 6/1...on paper, I think alot of corn gets planted on 5/31 if you know what I mean! Forecast looks kind of bleak for much planting to occur in the next week or so...could make for some interesting hunting, though....birds could get stacked up where there is corn, especially early season...and, being that the planting is happening about a month later this year than last, it will probably be a later harvest as well. Always interesting. Was out there 5/12-5/14....saw OK #'s of birds....cover should be lush given the moisture, and, maybe haying will be pushed back a bit which could help bird survival. Keep the fingers crossed that temps move higher and the sun starts to shine more.

Charles Mix county very wet

Had a call from the farmer that leases a lot of our ground and the story is that it is really wet in the Platte area. A lot of the food plot ground has standing water on it and some planted fields are now flooded.

He reports that not much nesting is going on.

I'm going down over memorial day to see for myself and will report on what I find next week when I get back.

Just across the river in Tripp county we have gotten a fair amount of rain in the last week but nesting is going great. I expect to see broods towards the end of next week. There have been quite a few hens nesting last year's wheat stubble that has been no tilled planted into corn. There are more in the Winter wheat and hay ground. It is looking very good here right now. Much better than other parts of the state.
