I am curious about the pros and cons and what you can use placeboard training for. Thanks.

I purchased the Ian Openshaw video and really like it. here is a link to an intro on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EkJqdv_SfE

He learned it from an American trainer. Puts some great basics into your puppy/dog and is easy to do and he does not hold back any info or guidance. He is an extremely accomplished and successful working dog trainer (English Cockers primarily but many other breeds). Just make sure you order the US DVD version and not the British due to the machine differences.

Depending on what you are trying to accomplish Place Board training can be very valuable..... or not.

What are your goals for place board training? I've used it for throwing standalone marks, simulating swimby in the winter months, and elementary handling drills.

I have been working on "place" with my dog for a while now. I am a little older and hunt with a group of younger guys where everyone has at least one dog some two. We try to hunt only a few dogs at a time so we always have fresh dogs. I think I can use "place" on my dog when either her or I need a break from the action. I plan to go with her to the end of a field and send her to place and use her as my blocking partner and retriever should I shoot something. So far so good after a month of working 10-15 minutes a day she will go to place on command sit and stay until I release her. I can go 30-40 yards away send her to retrieve a bumper ask her to bring it to me and send her back to place. Next step is to have someone with a bumper launcher walk through the field toward me and have him launch some bumpers and see If I can get her to mark and hold until I send her to retrieve them. I am excited about the prospect of using her for something a little different than I usually do. Normally we do not use blockers but I think if it works it will add another tool for us to use. I think this is going to work real good but we will see. I will report back either way.

I've been doing some place board work, as well, with my six month old pup. Just working on "whoa" at the moment.

I've been following this:

This is just the first video but you should be able to load the next two once you've finished watching the first. I found it quite helpful.

I LOVE place boards.
I used it a LOT in the beginning with my Lab pup. When she was about 4 months old I started by giving her a treat if she got on it. Puppies will do ANYTHING for a treat. Once she LOVED getting on the place board I Used it to teach her to "Heel."
Used it for steadiness, I'd throw bumpers and have her sit until I released her.

My favorite was using it to "Cast" her left and right and even "Back"
I had 2 place boards and i'd sit her on one. I'd point and say "Over" and she'd run to the other. We'd go back and forth. SO EASY. Put one behind her and say "Back" and off she went.
Once she was good at it I quit giving treats and eventually fazed out the place boards but I may get them out from time to time. Even at 18 months she still gets excited and jumps on one if I get them out.

When you taught the heel command to her I take it it was when you called her back in. Did she go straight to the board or did she come at you, circle behind you, and then go to the board?

She came straight back to heel on my left side. I've noticed on videos some times dogs circle behind? Never knew why as I'm not a professional trainer. I'm certain I could've taught her to circle behind me with the place boards...just didn't know I needed to.

Likely the reason for doing the circling from behind is so the dog is pointing in the same direction as the handler. having her come directly to your left side means that the dog has to do an about face which is probably not a big deal. Not sure what a pro would say about doing it that way, though, because I'm just a rookie myself.

I have used placeboards pretty extensively in training with my spaniel and they have helped immensely once I learned to use them correctly. There are many applications you can use them in. Jim Dobbs has some applications on use of placeboards on his site here https://www.dobbsdogs.com/library/retrievers/rjpart5.html
Also I have never seen a pro have a dog circle behind on a retrieve.

I haven't either BUT I have seen them do it with a "heel" command.
