Place to hunt ( not what you think )

Hi everyone,

I am going to ask for opinion on where to hunt ( not what you think ) no spot burning, SGL#'s, or Lon.Lat. #'s either.

My GOAL is to take off a few days of work and find a place to camp ie: State, Fed. park or camp ground and bounce around and hunt with my new hunting dog ( he just got started late last season )

Yes I have been doing my own research ( I'm not waiting for a total hand out ) to be honest PA. is a HUGE state and there are tons of places to hunt for Pheasants in PA., and I have been hunting around my area in South Central.

I would like to explore more of the state and hunt and camp at the same time.
would you find that a certain area like North West Berks county is more open then Southern Centre county or is the Southern part of Tioga State Forrest better environment for Pheasants and camping etc along those lines.

Thanks for any input and feel free to ask me any Flyfishing, AutoCAD, Electrical advice you want because that's all I know.

Dave.

I think your best bet would be to look at the stocking information for pheasants and go from there. Updated information will be out this fall but it should be the same as last year. Just check the PGC site. Some places get more birds than others. Since you are in York county (I'm in Adams) you have a lot of places close to home that get a good number of pheasants. Maybe you can hit some areas up north where you can chase some grouse as well.

This map can help you decide where you want to go for grouse:

You can get maps from a state forest office that has areas marked with recent timbering. Just call or send them an email. Maybe try to find one of those areas close to a stocking location for pheasants and give it a go.

What time of year are you looking to go? You may be able to get into some woodcock, too.

Thanks, Grouse, I totally forgot about that...that brings it to a whole new level:cheers:

I have started to respond to your Post only to find myself falling into the [ not what you think ] area!LOL. Lets see if I can help without getting others mad at me.
There is a county in the SW part of the state that is no longer a secret amongst bird hunters, pheasants in particular. The habitat is FANTASTIC and there are plenty of public places to hunt. And here's one for you, it also has some pockets of wild birds offering a very special hunt. Grouse are very limited but possible in the highlands. "hint" . You could spend a week there and not hunt the same spot twice. We try to make a trip to this county every year and we are never disappointed.

It's hard to answer these types of post without stepping on someone toes! Hope this helps.

The best pheasant/grouse combo is another story!:D

I would head north..north of Route 80. The northern tier does not get a lot of attention when it comes to pheasants however that does not mean that they are not there! There is one game lands that comes to mind that can rival anywhere in the state! If it is adventure your looking for I would head north..if you can find the right place you will not be at a loss when it comes to birds!

Please don't get me wrong I was'nt in any way shape or form asking for a "specific" spot/location just a general area/county/state/fed land where I could do some cool weather camping/hunting and if I get a bird or two then great if not, then I just wanted to get some new scenery in my memory before I die.

We are getting "jacked up" over the upcoming season, we have located a couple of new spots and have the first few weekends of the season planned. Can't wait.
