I have been reading everyone's reports and have come to the conclusion that the phez population is NOT what we were led to believe. If I am wrong, thenwhere are all the birds? My crew went to DC and saw very few birds, walking grass, private at that. Not wanting to know your hotspots, but is the bird population up or not.

Well, there aren't as many birds as usual in S Pawnee county I can assure you. However, there were still some crops in and the weather wasn't the best. We noticed a lot of birds running across the rows in front of us while we were hunting milo. They just didn't want to fly for us. I think this is part of the reason we didn't see as many birds as I'd expected.

Sounds like the area from Hill City to Quinter is pretty good, based on a couple of first hand accounts I received after the opener. One group by Quinter had 14 people in it and they filled their limit. Another group that hunted near Hill City shot 52 birds in 2 days with 7 guys. I would say there must be a pretty decent population up that way for them to have taken that many birds. I plan to visit this all too popular part of the state at least once this season.

I think quail numbers are up across much of the state.

We hunted in Stevens Co and our group of 16 limited out on Saturday. We didn't hunt Sunday due to the inclement weather.

Bird population looked pretty good where we were!

I hunted the Jewell county area and had much the same result as kansasbrittany, the birds were there but they didnt wanna fly for us! However i did limit out on quail for the first time in a few years, and they're more fun to hunt in my opinion!

I like the quail birds a little more myself as well. I just hadn't seen inspiring numbers for so long, but this year is different. Instead of going on 8 pheasant hunts this year, I think I'll be splitting my time up between the 2 species.

KB,
I live in SEK and have been out once, and some of my crew has been out 2-3 times, only 1 covey spotted so far.I am going out tomorrow to some prime land, will report back on it. I can remember back 30 yrs ago,go out and put up 3-5 coveys in a 160 acres,20-30 birds per...
I wish theose days would return for my kids sake.I don't think that they believe my stories.
Dog down,break covey,go after singles,dog down,another covey.This repeated itself 3 more times.Here's the kicker,this was on a parcel of land less then 10 acres.
How I wish for those days.
