Pheasant Opener

I am looking to plan a trip for myself and a few buddies for Pheasant opener. We are thinking about a trip down to Marshall or maybe even out to SD. I was wondering if any of you had any good recomendations for lodges in either location with decent access to public land. We are not interested in hunting game preserves or farms as that is what the off season is for haha. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

As far as minny goes i would wait to make any plans until aug. when the roadside counts come out im sure the numbers will be better than last year but alot of time for mother nature to mess with our birds ! Leave yourself with options is the best thing at this point Ive went to the same area of public land for the last 7+ yrs and the lst 3-4 have been nothing like like the first few hope for a good hatch

Gustav, agree on the public around Marshall being soft as far as production, but still have had success with some effort. I am not sure about lodging but there are a couple of places that will take dogs in Marshall with little fuss or expense. I think it was Travelers Lodge. Not much to look at but you can get a good night's sleep and its close to Perkins for breakfast.

I am thinking of Lac qui Parle this year. Needless to say I have yet to see anything like South Dakota hunting in Minnesota but where I have come close, I have seen it on public land outside Marshall. Thanks for this thread, by the way. Makes me smile thinking about this one flush.. Roosters and hens bailing out like a jailbreak with two roosters on the ground and more popping out of a fence line, watching them go. Limit in one hour :)

I would wait it out like Mitch said. Once the reports come out then figure out were to go. Also look at the amount of Public land in the area. The more the better trust me you will not be the only person that had that idea. I have also found the Marshall area to be very busy due to the college and the little big city. Just and FYI.

One other thing you might want to consider. Whenever the DNR lists the results of their August roadside counts, which ever area has the highest densities, you can rest assured every Tom, Dick and Harry Pheasant hunter who has read it will be homing in on that area on the opener. You will have stiff competition for public lands and you will need to be there at sunrise to secure an area.

I probably won't participate in the MN pheasant opener. I'll likely be out in MT or maybe ND. But if I were going on MN opener I would like birdshooter sez, Go the fringe type areas fewer roosters [maybe] but for sure fewer hunters.
Would make for a better hunt.

Coteau Hunts might still have some openings in SD. I'll be guiding there this fall.
I'll be guiding mostly do waterfowl, but some pheasants too. I know they get a lot of birds down there!
