Anyone seeing any chicks in MN yet? Just wondering what these rains did to the broods.

Saw two huge broods today both were newly hatched. Picked a nice day to hatch of course they are mowing the ditches right now.

seen some turkey poults out & about so happy to hear the pheasants were not far behind... just need a few wks of no hail & heavy extreme rain/weather hope they all do well fingers crossed!!!

i guess them ditch mowers out near headin west did not get the dont cut the ditch memo a??? there will be chicks pop n out all over in the next few wks/days

It is a joke that any farmer or township would wait until August 1. I wish they would but it just doesn't happen. Conditions have been pretty ideal for chicks lately other than the mowing.

I sprayed thistle on about 20 acres last weekend and did not see any pheasant broods at my place in SE Ottertail County. I did see one group of turkey poults.

I'll be spraying again next weekend and hopefully I'll see some pheasant broods.

Just saw my first brood today. Hen with 7 chicks, about a week old, maybe 10days old, may have been more in ditch. Scott County, Spring Lake Township. This area had 5-6 inches of rain Saturday morning and they survived! Amazing.

I did get up a couple of juvenile birds at different locations this past weekend. I only saw one bird each time but I would think there were more I just didn?t get close enough to get them to fly.

I was glad to see them.

I'm not in MN pheasant range I did see one small batch 4-5 near here.
Talk about turkey though! Hens are with 10-12 1 pound size chicks. I've seen several dozen broods on the ranch and on the side roads going to the ranch.
Heck of a hatch!

Took the pooch out for a quick run yesterday about 9:00 at a wildlife management area close to the cities. After about 15 minutes she was on point. Walked in and kicked up a hen with and 6 chicks. Released the dog and she ran around and after a couple minutes she pointed 2 more chicks I kicked up. Released her again and she runs around another minute or so and pointed a single chick. Was really surprised that the chicks were as big as they were. Chicks were fist size or a little bigger and good fliers.

Then went over to the Wisconsin side of the river to play golf later in the day and walking up to one of the greens a hen and her brood of 7 or 8 runs out of some grassy cover, behind some pines and into some other cover about 20yds away. These also were good sized (about the same as the morning brood). Made me think nesting wasn't delayed, or renesting wasn't needed. It really improved my outlook for the season. :)

Cover seems to have benefitted from the amount of rain we have had and appears much taller and thicker than the last couple years for the time of year. Around here anyway. Hope this helps keep those preditors from above from being successful.
