Pheasant chick sighting!

On Saturday the farmer cut his wheat field and he is doing more work in the fields today. This field is bordered by a fence row, cow pasture and other crop fields. It is across the road from the CREP fields that I release pheasants in for the local club. When I was driving back from the club, I saw a pheasant chick fly across the road! It looked to be about 4-5 weeks old and went to the bean field. I didn't see any others but hopefully some are around. This makes three years in a row that a brood or a portion of a brood was seen in the area. I don't know how long they survive but it is always nice to see them.

That's beginning to become a regular occurrence in your area..what more can you ask for..you have birds year round and reproducing..very cool!:10sign:

Brian,
Your success with pen raised birds is WAY above average. It's to bad there isn't more continuos habitat. You can understand why the South East and South Central were such bird meccas when they had the habitat

We've been getting some GREAT reports from the areas that we hunt.

Glad to hear that you're getting good reports.

How is Dugan doing? I think he's about the same age as Nittany and Nittany is slowing down a little. He will still go out for runs but some days he goes up to lay on the bed instead of going out with Champ and Blitz. Nittany will be 11this November.

Not sure how Dugan will do this season, he ended last year stronger than when he started because of the injury before the season. He's perfectly healthy but like Nittany he is eleven. Because of his age I won't run him till the end of August, just light exercise before that. Man...where does the time go!

Do you think there is a new pup in your future?

I think I'll be limiting Nittany's time in the field this year. I'm not sure how he will handle an all day hunt. I'll have to see how he handles things.

On another note, my wife saw two pheasants chicks today. They were walking towards a cow pasture.

Yes...at some point there will be a new pup. The ideal time frame has already passed. Dugan is a special" character" and a pup at this stage would change his personality. He could adjust to it...but he wouldn't be the same.

Maybe you should take just Nittany on some special short hunts!

You guys keep seeing all those chicks and we'll have to add your area as a wild pheasant zone! :D

Hey Guys an old dog is better than no dog! :)

We spent some time on vacation in Somerset County, on one day we saw 5 different pheasant broods. The cover in this area looked great!
In our area we have heard reports of broods, can't wait for the season to begin.
