On November 15th the Susquehanna Valley Chapter of Pheasants Forever held its 5th annual Veterans Hunt at Mason Dixon Hunting Farm in Glen Rock, PA. It was a beautiful morning even though the temps were below freezing at the start. The day started out with some OJ, donuts and a discussion about PF. We talked about hunting behind dogs since some of the vets never hunted pheasants before. Our chapter VP talked about his friend who was a Viet Nam veteran who was the only survivor of his unit. He survived quite an ordeal and was to take part in our hunt today. Unfortunately, he passed away over the summer. We held a moment of silence for him prior to the hunt. Before we went to the fields, each hunter received a certificate of appreciation from the PA House of Representatives and a Pheasants Forever pin for veterans.
We headed to the fields with 5 veterans who represented the Army, Navy and Marines. Some were still active and others served in Viet Nam. They were all excited and appreciated the opportunity to spend the day hunting. Some of the vets never hunted pheasants while for others it has been over 25 years since they walked the fields with dogs in search of the colorful pheasant. One hunter just kept saying over and over "This is awesome, this is awesome!" The dogs worked well, the birds flew hard, some ran and some got away but everybody had a great day and made some memories that will last a lifetime.
The veterans who served in Viet Nam were especially thankful because they said nobody did anything for them when they returned home. I'm glad I can be part of an organization that can honor these men they way they deserve. It was a great day and pictures will soon follow.
