Packed up for the weekend tonight

I spent the evening getting my gear packed for the weekend. I can't wait for Saturday!

Where I hunt it's quite common to get into both pheasant and quail on the same day, plus I hunt some steel only areas. This year I ended up packing 4 different vests. 1 pheasant steel, 1 pheasant lead, 1 quail steel, 1 quail lead. I am not wasting time switching shells around between fields this year.

That's a great idea. Although in my vest I carry quite a bit more than just shells. Now that I think of it I don't carry many shells at all really. Maybe a dozen. I don't shoot that much. Mostly lack of birds lol

That is a great idea...now I just need to buy 3 more vests, no make that 9 more vests b/c I don't wanna be waiting on my kids either:D

I finally bought a Wingworks vest for this season, I don't think I could ever afford 4 of those. I just go with 6's in the bottom barrel and 5's in the top for my 20ga o/u.

About packed up too. Box goes in tonight and we leave tomorrow at noon.

I have a vest that I can put 4 diff types of loads in and then I just sharpie the pocket with what load is in it. Been working well for a few years now.

Good Luck all and be safe!

Kick Them Up!

Hey you-all,
We had a little snaffoo with our hunt plans this year. The farmers land we hunt was hit with a terrible hail storm last month and virtually wiped out the quail and pheasant not to mention the damage to their houses and crops. It is a bad situation for them.
So, this year we are still coming out to the wonderful state of Kansas but going to hunt walk-ins. Are there steel shot requirements in KS for public lands? Please let me know.
Best to all,
Wolf

Wolf, steel is not required for the regular WICA public walk-ins. Good luck and safe travels.

BB,
Thanks for the quick reply! For the record, is steel required for upland anywhere in the state? Just want to make sure we don't run into any issues.
Wolf

I hope that everyone has a safe and exciting opening weekend! Please leave a few behind for us to find;)
Two weeks from right now we should be pulling into the hotel and putting on our boots; can't wait!
Best to all,
Wolf

Steel is only required in certain areas. I certainly can't name them all, but I'm pretty sure it's required on Mcpherson Valley Wetlands, Quivira NWR (probably all the NWR in the state), and Cheyenne Bottoms. It certainly is NOT required on the run-of-the-mill WIHA.

and Slate Creek and Isabel in the south. Jamestown , west of Concordia. And maybe Kirwin?? I think there is couple others in the NE??

Quivira is closed due to Whooping cranes last I heard.

The rule in Kansas is pretty much if it's a "wetland" you have to have steel. Interesting that hunting around a Kansas reservoir does not require steel.
