Our Iowa Opener

Ok Ok, so we didnt actually make the opener. We were fortunate to have Baja's breeder from Germany stop by and visit us for a couple of days. So we missed the opener. But Jim and I were able to sneak away today and chase some of Iowa Ringnecks.
No need for a long drawn out story. We could have shot our limits twice. But we chose to only shoot points and we were able to stick to it. We did have a couple of points where we dropped the ball. There were also a lot of hen points.
Baja( 5 months old) was able to get her first point on a wild Iowa Pheasant. That to me was the highlight.

Here are pics and a short 3 minute video.

all the way from Germany? How cool is that! I still remember my Goldens first rooster..:D I could tell the story for the 437th time if you'd like????
Enjoy the ride!

Tell away bud! I love a good story.:)

Well, they are Small Munsterlanders or as Iowa Labs calls then "Mustardlanders"

My male and newest female we imported from Germany. My oldest female is from WI.
They are bred to hunt upland, waterfowl and fur. They are also outstanding tracking dogs.
In Germany they were bred for "After the shot" and game recovery.
Very nice house dogs and good with the family.
Hater of cats, unless it is part of the pack. If not, all bets are off.
They are social climbers. If you are not the pack leader, they will be happy to lead it for you.
There are all kinds of breeds that can get the job done. But this is the one that is for me and I will never be without one.

They are not always as close working as the video shows. But the cover dictated that they work in closer. It was prbably not fair that I work the pup in such thick cover.

Nice dog work.I am hoping to find time to get to Iowa soon. They are saying that the bird #s are up

mstand your fun to tease

i tease mstand but her dogs are great and really are versatile hunters:thumbsup:.

thats a great little dog you have there!!! my little girl was just turning 6 month on MN pheasant opener & i didnt get her on much bird action but on our MN prairie chicken hunt little LOLA did great she pointed a few birds but wasnt the most steady but she was a monster when it came to retrieving downed birds she marked & ran to 2 birds her self & picked the bird up & brang it to me 2 other birds i had to head to towards the bird but she then picked up on what to do she even found my dads 1st ever prairie chicken!!!

my cousin has a 11 month old SM & she wanted no part of the downed birds??? almost scared of the floping birds???

i need to get my girl on a higher bird population she was doing a lot or work for the few birds we did get up... she did great in the pheasant field up there also she led me to 3-4 birds they were far out & i missed the shot i was bummed!!! for the dog that is!!!

going to be get n her out again soon!!!

great pics & story MSTAND please keep us posted on the future hunts...

also hey is there always alot of difference in the look of each litter of SMs like my 6 month old SM is taller & much more SETTER like in appearence then your dog pictured??? my cousins SM looks damn near like your dog to the T size color & head wise??? my girl has much more WAVY hair on the back & a longer more SPANIEL like head/nose & bigger more floppy ears then my cousins dog & i think yours pictured??? also my SM seems to have more feathering around her legs & neck/ears then your dog & my cousins??? any reason you could think of that this is the case???

i did read some things on-line wear they mention the difference in the SM lines the smaller line & the more SETTER like line is there any truth to that still today in the SM breed???

sorry dont mean to high jack your thread just thought id ask somebody with more knowledge then my-self a few questions about SMs...

thanks again for posting your story & pics keep em coming... if i new how to post pics i would try to do so & show you my LOLA... maybe i can E-mail you a pic sometime??? take care & happy safe hunting

Email them to me. Yes, they do have different looks. You have taller and athletic like my male and shorter and stout. It may trace back to the begining.
As far as my girl goes. I know she is lacking in the leg furnishings because I have my dogs out in the fields all the time. I am always combing out burs. My male looks more like a long tailed short hair right now then a Munster.
I will dig up some info for you. There is also a great book called "Pointing Dogs the continetals. You should look it up. It is pricey, but good.

FYI, the tail should reach to the tip of the hock. But, she is a pup, so dont even look at anything on her until 18 months. That is when she would be put up for breed approval, if you so chose to go that route.

Ever need help with anything, just let me know. :)

I have a breeding planned with Rods dog "Daisy". She was suppose to come in Oct. But has not yet. I am looking forward to this breeding.
