Started off pretty rough on monday super windy thought our tent ended up in the land of oz but we managed 1 flush that afternoon of 2 birds.Tuesday morning was my buddys birthday and the gods began to smile upon us 2 hours after breakfast we broke down camp and headed home with our 2 man limit.:D

Looks like a great time. I've never hunted grouse of any kind. Do these birds flush way out ahead usually? Where do you find them?

Finally, there is quite a difference in size. I assume the smaller ones are young birds.

Good job RM, glad somebody caught up with 'em!

All I found on a 1-day hunt was feathers where somebody else had already knocked one down... :p Not sure if I'll get out for mountain blues again this yr, but God willing guess there's always next year...

KB the blues hold super tight on day 2 one flushed & my buddy shot and up jumped 4 more and as we both fired anothr group of 4 jumped as we fired again 2 more flushed all came out of small cluster of aspens maybe 10 feet in radius the other thing these birds do is fly right on top of the sage bushes thats why we dont use my dog he's a chaser, alot of times they jump up into the trees thats when we use the pump and flush system to get them out we dont tree trim not very sporting you litterually need to kick them off the ground so we usually like to b.s. as we push the bush sure beats the quiet pheasant walks we all endure. We tend to find them at about 8000ft to 9500ft in elevation with a good mix of aspens and pines, find area's with good food source like choke cherries, huckle berries they feed on that stuff until the snow starts flyin. You also assumed right about the size the funny part is the bigger ones usually flush first and the young ones wait until they here shoots then they fly usually not the case for pheasants. Thanks hen the past year was not so fruitful after this hunt i to dont think i'll be chasin the blues so i will be forever greatful for this blessed hunt.

I hunted Spruce Grouse while stationed up in Alaska. I was stationed at Elmendorf and we would run into them while duck hunting. I also shot some willow ptarmigan. I will post my pic if I can ever get it scanned.

The spruce grouse are alot like the blues, "stupid chickens"....

I am going to try this year if not then next year for sure.

My son is hoping to go Dusky (Blue) Grouse hunting in the next few weeks and I haven't been Grouse hunting since I was little. We used to go to the Red Cone area by Grant and I am wondering if anyone knows if that is still a good area. It seems like we used to go down by Saquache, too. He lives in Colorado Springs and Gunnison is almost four hours away, so we are hoping for something a bit closer. Thanks in advance.
