Opening Day

Little Brit

Opening day today and I could only get out for a few hours this evening do to parenting. I went for a drive this afternoon and seen hunters all over so my chances of baging a bird were slim. I went to a spot close to my house that always holds birds and the grass was flatened by hunters but my time was limited so I gave it a go anyway. I got into some thick cover and the dog was on woodcock I passed up on a few shots so I would not push any pheasant away. I looked everywhere and finaly a half point then this hen explodes out of thick cover. It got a ways out as I was tangled in some brush but I let a shot go and dropped it (these new kent loads are great) and retrieved to hand. I was excited 1 1/2 in and I got a bird. then she locks on point and a woodcock rockets straight up and I got that to. I was gonna pass it up but I thought I would reward the point and take it. That also was brought back to hand. Not bad dog work for a 12 yr old brit. Hope to get out again tomorrow for some more action.

Sorry no pictures this time

Yes the area I hunt has a release program and you are allowed 3 birds of either sex a day not bad for $22. The season is a few month long and they release 800 birds in a few different location throught the town. Its not a bad deal. A group of buddies just went to hunt on Pelee Island in the middle of lake Erie and they pay $200 just for the license for a 2 day hunt plus ferry cost, food booze and gas ect. I did the hunt a few years ago total cost was $700. Thats crazy to only be allowed 10 birds for 2 day hunt.
