Opening day reports

So how did everyone do?

I was out with my dad, brother, and uncle at our special opening day spot on the river. The cover was pretty rank but the quail were doing good. We only moved 3 coveys before it got hot but they all had around 40 birds. My dad and uncle both skunked, my brother got 1 and I ended up with 7 (the guy with the best dog gets the best shots). I probably could have finished up my limit but the dogs were running hot so we decided to call it.

Qh,

Looks like you all had a good hunt. Glade to hear the quail are doing well in Cali. I too would like to here more reports from cali hunters.

Sounds nice. For some reason when I think of bird hunting California doesn't come to mind. But maybe it should.

Great to hear quail hound!

We hunted hard all weekend and didn't see a single quail. Never had that happen before. We hunted Mountain Quail on day one and Valley Quail day two. Very few birds were taken in the areas we hunted. Very slow year down here I'm afraid. The only bright spot for me was that my young dog was good at flushing and retrieving rabbits. I normally wouldn't bother even posting about such by catch, but given the dismal quail numbers I was happy to see him work on something. So rabbit stew it is.

Despite the slow weekend, my two hunting partners, one of which is new to hunting, while the other is new to bird hunting had a great time. The fall leaves were nice in the mountains and the weather was pleasant. Time with friends at quail camp makes for a good time. There are many angles to this hunting hobby.
