Nutria Rat Hunt - SE Louisiana

In the state of Louisiana Nutria are classified as a nuisance animal and are to be taken by any means all year long without limits as long as you have written permission from the landowner. They can even be taken at night with police notification.

After the duck season closes, we go shoot the nutria up in the same marshes we hunt ducks in. It’s nice to ride through the marsh taking in the sights while getting some shooting in.

Why do you keep them? Bounty? Louisiana crawdad and nutria boil?

We give them all to a black guy who is a caretaker for many of the camps on our road. He takes them all. He sells them in the area to make a little money. By law we don't have to pick them up but we do and bring them back for him. Fun for us and he gets a little action.
