north west kansas

hunted some of my favorite areas for parts of two days and things looked pretty sad. dove hunting was horrible, condition of the crop situation looked even worse. water was about non existent, weeds were low, crp while i didn't see much of it was pretty short and barely worth hunting. most of the dove hunting was in shelter belts and old farm steads, ideal places to find a mommy and her chicks, my two dogs never got up a bird nor did i ever see one, i let my dogs run loose, pastor john with his mutt found a small covey of quail, kinda surprise, and one hen pheasant. no birds beside the roads, we hunted all day, early and late, kinda disappointed. went back to colorado and saw dove by the hundred, john was having some shooting problems and his dog doesn't much like dove hunting, plenty of flies to go around though.
many spots had water holes and very high weeds where we went. things that kansas didn't seem to have, hope this isn't the end of the story and the mail route survey says better but what i saw was bleak. got a new aya 28 ga. coming, maybe that will break up the probable hunting gloom

cheers

Have quite a bit of land to hunt out that way. If we make the trip it will be to visit farmers and friends, share a few drinks and have a good time. Of course at some point the dogs will need to run too. Doesn't seem to be many birds for them to find.

Think its going to be a tougher than normal season in most of KS.
But I am still going bird hunting, just the same.
