Non-Toxic - Plot Land

Obsession

I am looking for some feedback to hopefully clear the air a bit about non-toxic shot.

In SD, is it legal to use lead shot on WIA/Plot properties?

I think there is a great deal of confusion about this in the hunting community.

Thank You!

Good question. Here is the rule right out of the SD Hunting Handbook

"Nontoxic Shot is required to hunt small game on most public lands. Lead shot may be used on private lands including private lands leased by GFP as Walk-In Areas. See "Nontoxic Shot" under the General Laws section for more information."

Note that waterfowl hunting is ALWAYS non-toxic except for allowance of Youth to shoot lead during their special season.

So lead OK for pheasant on SD WIA land. This is private land leased by the SD GFP.

What about Other Lands?

GREAT ANSWER!

So, WIA land seems straight forward. What about the other classifications for land found on the atlas? What is the rules on each of these?

â?¢*BLM
â?¢ National Grasslands
â?¢ Corps of Engineers
â?¢ Waterfowl Production Areas (upland hunting)
â?¢*Game Production Areas
â?¢*School & Public Land

Thank You Again!

I always just shoot steel when I hunt public lands it just eliminates any confusion and steel has performed for me just as well as lead.

Simple answer: Waterfowl is alway non-toxic and if the land is not privately owned then it is non-toxic. So far the only exception is the WIA lands which are privately owned. Everything else is owned by the taxpayer.
