No excitement???

On a good note. Ended my day with two roosters in the bag. Allowed a pair of very young roosters go as well. Saw a few old nests and action around food plots. Hope this helps turn the doom and gloom down a bit! Oh. And the dog hunted great as well. Good day!

Thanks for the update Boombaby and congrats on your first two roosters of the season.

Plus, at the lest we know there's still 2 roosters out there to be chased later this season.:D

I hunted the resident opener near Martin yesterday on some GPA's. The bad bird reports are true. We didn't see a bird on the way there and the hunting was tough. The only birds taken were just turning colors from a "late" hatch.

We were checked by the local warden (great guy BTW) and he indicated it would be a tough year, especially after that last storm went through last week. Doom & gloom or reality, take your pick.....

Still going

I know it's bad, but that wont keep me trying to find some birds. I will hunt from the North through the center of the State looking for birds.......it's all I have for wild birds!;)

I don't suppose anyone wants to here that I have spent the last 10 days harvesting in SD and have yet to see a bird.

wow!! uuuuuumm safari maybe you are right? If I was going to south dak I think I would just focus on sharpies but I wouldn't know how or where to go for them? I mean when you got a guy havesting 10 days and no sightings why would you waste your time and money? I know its all about dogs friends blah blah blah but we can do that lots closer to home good luck people damn!!!!!!!!!!

Went out at noon today and 5 minutes into the hunt my dog started to get birdy by a small patch of cattails. Ended up putting 5 hens up out of there. I was hoping they had some male companionship but it must of been ladies night. Never saw another bird the rest of the hunt. Late in the afternoon I went out again. About 20 minutes into the hunt my dog gets birdy in a small patch of trees. A young pheasant gets up and I give it the a good look over and realize it's a hen. Same thing happens again and it's another hen. This happened 6 times and the all appeared to be hens. The farthest one got up about ten feet away and the closest one got up at my feet. For their size a rooster would have been showing some color. After that the only pheasant I saw is when we bumped one of those young birds again.

Hey moeller when you are harvesting how many do you usually see lets just say on an average year ?? Or tell me all the years I don't care and what part of the state? Does that have anything to do with it thanks bryan

To be fair the part of the state I farm in is pretty low in numbers to begin with, SE. I would say we usually see a couple everyday combining beans.

Hunted in Pierre area Sat and Sunday. Hunted areas near picked crops. Was tough hunting to say the least even with fresh crops picked next to the public. Wondering if this cold wet rain is killing any of those really young birds?
